Fobia gun help

I keep dying in Fobia for PS5 because I can't use my first pistol on the 7th floor of the hotel. It prompts me to press L2 to aim and R2 to shoot, but when i do that, nothing happens. And I've tried to press every button on the controller to use the gun, but it never appears. And when I go to the pistol in my inventory, nothing happens. Am I doing something wrong (clearly I am)? I feel like this is the end of the level and it's so frusting because I keep having to start over. Ugh!
