Game Trends You Would Like To See Less Of In This Generation

A few previous threads on the topic of wanting to see less FPS and zombie games reminded me that there are probably a handful of complaints that we all commonly have that might be worth discussing.

My personal pick would be quick time events. I'm a fan of God of War, which I think is the one that popularized it, but even then I never really got the appeal of it. I feel like a five year old playing with a Bop It toy, which even at 5, I bet would have gotten old really fast - and frankly, I feel it to be a little condescending/patronizing when used in modern games marketed for adults. It's just a personal opinion, though, and I would totally understand if it turns out that it is a welcome feature to some people.

Are there any game trends you guys would be happy to see die out?

They would have to think of a better system than QTE in that case, and I don't believe that will happen. But if it does, I agree that QTE should die out, even though it was fun sometimes (but rarely, to be honest).

The fighter genre is very stale. "Fight on a 2D plane and eliminate your opponent's health bar, using button combinations for special moves". This is a status quo that has rarely been innovated upon. Smash Bros did a great job of making a fighting game exist with completely different fundamentals. But it seems every year there is a new Tekken, a new Street Fighter, a new Marvel/Capcom, and/or some Asian invention like BlazBlue or Persona 4 Arena. It's very bland, and has me salivating more than ever for the next Smash Bros release.

The FPS seems saturated.

What I'm really hoping for is more games with lots of gameplay featured OFFline. That's something I always look for when purchasing a game. Long single player offline modes.

As much as I hate to admit it, I have to agree. I think the 2D fighting genre has been lost for a very long time now, even though the new games are still very fun and surviving, albeit barely.

Completely agree with everything you said. Unfortunately, it looks like this next gen seems like it will be featuring more FPS and online gameplay

That's how entertainment has progressed, so it makes sense. Everything's digital and shareable. It's in high demand, where gaming dinosaurs like myself are having a hard time keeping up.

First, bop it is amazing and will remain amazing forever. Next, yeah I'm sick of the FPS genre and bored by zombies. However I would like to see more offline focus, like someone said earlier in the thread my main focus when I buy a game is how much single player content it has.

I'm really tired of epic multiplayer games having single player aspects. Just concentrate on what you're good at. Like COD and BF haha. Another thing is I'm tired of seeing the same ol' RPG games. Seriously, everything is copy and paste and edited with their own flare. I want something truly epic and even though I'm no game designer I have like 100000 ideas.
