Games take up too much memory.

Paradox

New Member
I know I've got 500 gigs and the system takes up 100 of that or so I believe. But games like Assassin's Creed and Fallout 4 after installing still take up too much memory...and I play these games off of the disc. I wonder why. Games didn't take up that much memory on the PS3 unless you downloaded the entire game off PSN. So just wondering why they do on the PS4 so much. At this rate I'm going to need a bigger hard drive if I'm going to invest in more games on this system.

Thoughts?

The PS3 as well as the X360 didn't install the whole game on HD, unless you wanted to. The PS4 does it automatically and uses the disc only like a key to start the game.

Is there a setting where I can just have it play off of the disc instead?

Also, remember too, the games are much more graphically intensive than the PS3 so they naturally take up more space anyway :)

This is a HUGE difference between PS3 and PS4. I loved the PS3, thought it looked amazing, but now with the PS4 it looks old and dated. Really, still is good, but nothing like the PS4. Going back to play old games on the PS3 feels ancient now. Hard drives are pretty cheap if you need the extra space. I know I am going to be adding at least a 1TB or possible 2TB drive soon. Had to delete a few games to make way for new ones.

If I was a betting man I would put everything on DRM. I believe That Sony had every intention of following in Microsoft's foot steps in the beginning. After seeing all the flack that Microsoft was getting they changed their policy but it was already part of the programming that required the whole disk to be installed. I don't think Microsoft had any idea what Sony was about to pull at the infamous E3 of 2013. I think it was a last minute decision that made Sony shine and the rest is history. This is also why I don't understand why people still buy physical copies. Digital and Physical take the exact amount of space. The only advantage of Physical is if you like being screwed by gamestop. Digital never get scratched, Never get broke, never get lost. Even if for some unfortunate reason you drive stops working you are still good to go.

1.Much cheaper prices for new releases,PSN for new releases are a rip off.

2.Not everyone in the world has fast internet speeds so downloading huge amounts of data not only takes ages but if deleted or lost for some reason downloading again would make you go crazy.

3.Trading,selling used games to recoup some money for next purchase as nice too.

It does seems we are headed for digital only in the future, perhaps even with PS5 and I loathe when that day comes.

I still prefer physical disks. I like having my game collection on display. It's a badge of honor for me, the same reason people have books in a personal library or countless DVDs. It's not as big of a statement when you say "look at my game collection" and you have to boot up your console. Also, physical copies are forever. You can only download a game X amount of times from the PS store if your hard drive crashes or you need to put it on another console because it dies. And here's another scenario. I like playing old games and have all my consoles hooked up minus my NES since the reader is broken and haven't gotten around to fixing it. Say 20 years from now, I want to play MGSV and my PS4 is broken. I can buy another PS4 and load it in from the disk. 20 years from now, I won't be able to download it from the PS Store, even though I bought it 20 years prior. Also, if my drive breaks, I can always replace the drive easy enough ;)

The problem with current gaming both disc and digital, is what you mentioned at the end of your post. In twenty years time when you boot up your classic ps4 and install whatever games. Unfortunately if you bought digital the servers will have been long since turned off, so that will not work. However even your discs may not save you, as most games released nowadays have huge day one patches, further updates and dlc etc which also will not be available from the long since turned off servers. So your game either will not exist (digital) or be a broken mess that is probably unplayable.

You don't need the patches to run the game. It's not like a patch comes out and it bricks the game unless you download it (except in online only games like Destiny). If the game isn't communicating with a server, there's no way for it to know if there's an update or not. That's why if your console isn't plugged into the internet and you plug it in after a couple weeks, you have a ludicrous amount of updates. If you deny an update, you just can't log in for online features. I do it all the time when there's a patch or an update if I just want to play. I've played MGSV so many times denying an update and still played the single player more than fine.

3 things. I don't need any internet connection to play my downloaded games. I do if I am playing on another system other then my primary system though. Where do you find out how many time you can download a game you have purchased? I have looked but haven't found anything. Last but not least. when you fill out your home insurance they ask you about valuables. You can insure your games. I have 378 physical copies on various systems + another 100 or so digital 20 gaming consoles and 1 hell of an insurance policy on them. So when they shut it down all will be good here.

I don't think you can see how many times you downloaded a game. But at one point Sony allowed you to download it something like 3 or 5 times if I recall correctly. Don't know if they changed that policy. Not like they'd make an announcement for that :)

EDIT: Found this at the PS community. Pretty much explains it :) If you don't feel like clicking the link; 5 times total on PS3. PS4 no limit as long as it's tied to your account. So if you download a game on a friend's PS4, you have to be logged in for it to work.

You are miss understanding it. Here is a good example, I bought the DLC for C.O.D. W@W when the limit was 5. That means you can have it on 5 consoles at a time. I had it on my 4 and 1 copy on my nephews. He got rid of his PS4 so I called Sony and got everything tied to my account blocked from his system. I did it by the serial #'s. The 1 I didn't have the #'s for was the 1 they removed the stuff from. I have since Down loaded many times. I can DL it as many times as I want. Also any game that was bought with the 5 activation's was grandfathered in and can still be downloaded on 5 systems. The PS3 just needs my info on it for all my purchases to work. Anybody can use the game. In the event of W@W 5 people can play the DLC maps at the same time with only 1 season pass purchased. Now the PS3 has gone to 2 but it works the same, Just on to systems instead of 5. I have been digital for a long time now. The Last physical game I bought at release was Black Ops. I know what I can do. If you want I can record me deleting it of all 4 of my PS3's and then re downloading it?That would be a total of 8 downloads that you could see. I have unlimited internet so it's no biggie. This is not written to be argumentative or in a snarky tone. I am just offering to prove myself and let people know the truth about Digital.

You don't have to prove it, lol. I believe you. It's a case of misinformation. I read on Sony's support website years ago that you can only download it 5 times. They didn't go into specifics by saying it can only be on 5 consoles at a time or if you delete it on 4 consoles, you can put it on 4 more. All this crap can be confusing and Sony has never really explained policies very well.

I know you do not always need the update or patches to play the game, but to play the complete game as the developer visioned it you often do. Not many games come out now that do not have bugs that need sorting after release.

Plus most games now are all about the multiplayer for instance STAR WARS Battlefront there will be no point having the disc twenty years from now all you will get to play are the missions which is not even 10 percent of the game.

Still each to your own I have just chosen to go all in with the digital only this generation, I know there are lot of people who only want physical media, at least you are keeping our game stores in business.

Good point about the multiplayer only games. I'm still kinda upset about MAG. Played that game a lot a couple years before they shut the servers. Would have been ok if there was a replacement game. Miss playing the missions with 256 other people online. The problem with that game though was lack of missions. You payed 60 bucks for 3 missions, lol. Still cracks me up when I see it for sale at GameStop :D

I don't mind supporting a game store. I mean, I could care less if GameStop goes out. My gripe with game retailers though is there is no little guy. It's GameStop and like Best Buy. A couple of small stores popped up by me but they sell old consoles and games, not new consoles and games.

ok so call of duty is a 50 gb game at launch, the dlc patches are 10 gb each, and some of the content patches are 7-9. rip os4
