Gamestop - Xbox One and PS4 to be less than 360/PS3 at launch

The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 will be less expensive at launch than their predecessors, according to comments from GameStop chief financial officer Rob Lloyd.


Speaking today in a post-earnings financial call, Lloyd said GameStop does not have official pricing information from Microsoft or Sony, but expects a "lower opening price point than they did last cycle."

The Xbox 360 launched in 2005 for $300/$400, while the PlayStation 3 debuted in 2006 for $500/600.

In addition, GameStop said it expects to be a leading retailer for the Xbox One and PlayStation 4. The company explained that because of the trade credits it can offer consumers through its buy-sell-trade model, gamers will be able to pick up next-gen systems at GameStop for less than anywhere else.

GameStop management also dodged a question regarding the reports that the Xbox One will require gamers to pay a fee to play secondhand titles, a move that could impact the company's business.

The retailer declined to comment on its talks with Microsoft, instead saying it will allow the Xbox maker to lead the discussion about this topic.

I am taking this with a grain of salt considering the source. Gamestop is in full panic mode right now and are probably just trying to put pressure on Sony and Microsoft.

If this is true I will wind up with both by the Spring. Halo is really my must have for Xbox One but right now I am all about the PS4, at that price I have to have it. The only thing holding back my decision is to see what they do with DRM and used games. That might be a killer.

Saw this article before, pretty excited about it. Hopefully this is real since some people are already doubting it. The placeholder price for the PS4 is currently 900 on Amazon from what I've heard, hopefully they'll tone down the price.

Yeah I plan on grabbing both consoles eventually with the PS4 taking first priority.

Probably a lie. Also some Gamestops might do this but not all. It'll be a location specific move. So if you think all Gamestops across America will partake in this if it happens at all? You're naive.

I'm skeptical that this will happen, but I hope it's true, of course. If it does turn out to be true, I'll probably consider buying one shortly after the release period just to check it out seeing as it probably won't have that many games for it at that time. Either way, I'm sure it will be great and I'm now looking forward to getting one more than ever.

This has taken quite a buzz in the gaming gossip lately. Of course, gamers are thrilled that the price would be lesser than the launch of their predecessors. I do hope that the rumor is true. I think Sony and Microsoft should heed this buzz because if gamers find out at launch date that this is not true, a lot of them might be disappointed and may even skip purchasing either of the consoles.

I would like this to be true but I doubt it will. It would be great to have this software at a brilliant price but by the time it comes out I think
both prices will be more.

As much as I'd like for this true, I honestly believe this won't be the case. 299/399 for the new Xbox seems too cheap for me. It's a possibility, but highly unlikely. I expect it to come out for $499. As for the PS4, I believe it's more likely for it to come out equal or less than it's predecessor. I'm putting it at $599, or $499. Then again it's all up to speculation so anything can happen. They can come out for $999 or $199 for all we know. Only time will tell. (Crossing my fingers it's on the cheaper end)

The new X-Box will be $500. And with sales tax, $515 most likely. Very expensive.
