The only thing which bugged me about Gran Turismo was the lack of any sort of visual damage to the cars. Considering how impressive it was for it’s time, that really was a drawback. As much as I liked the game, I must admit that was one aspect I never did like. This is why a part of me did prefer the TOCA series of racing games. Another slight drawback, and I am being a bit pedantic with this, to Gran Turismo was the steering wheel I had for my Playstation at the time. I never could set it up the ratio correctly. My wheel could almost do a full 180 degree turn. It worked near perfectly on TOCA and could go trough almost the whole lock on my wheel and it related to full lock on the in-game cars. In Gran Turismo, around the 90 degree turn mark on my wheel converted to being full lock on the in-game cars.
Other than that, it really was a true revolutionary game. As I said a bit further up the thread, the leap between this game and 'Hard Drivin’ ' on my Sega Megadrive earlier on in the same decade really does sum up the huge leap. We haven’t really seen any jump that big before or since in my opinion. I think I won just about everything on it in the end but I will admit that it did take a lot of time and frustration to achieve. Some of it was probably more down to luck than anything else. I think I achieved gold in almost every aspect/test of all the licences too. I think there was only one section of the licences where I couldn’t get beyond a silver which bugged me for a good couple of years. It was one game where I did have a real rivalry with my best friend.
As a side note, Gran Turismo 2 had an awesome selection of cars including the Corsa 1.6 Sport – a car my father had brand new from 1998-2000.
