GTA V For PC "Leak" Infects Thousands Of Computers Worldwide

Seems like a few over enthusiastic gamers learned an important pirating lesson the hard way. Cnet reports that a torrent of GTA V for PC appeared in Google searches and was downloaded thousands of times, but eventually the downloaders found out that the file contained a malware. I had read on some other sources that they were just used to get redirected to survey sites, but I don't know if that was the only effect. Here is one of the articles about it from CNET:

The file looks legit, appearing near the top of Google search results, and nearly 7,000 users connected; however, appearing as a setup.exe file, the first clue that something could be awry is the file size 18.3GB, compared to 7.7GB for the Xbox 360 version.

Torrent scam hits thousands eager for PC version of GTA V

This is actually kind of silly, but unfortunately that's what happens some times. Though I'm sure Rockstar had no part in the malicious torrent, it sort of reminds me of the stories of the indie game Game Dev Tycoon which had something programmed into it that could tell if you were playing a pirated version of the game. As the name suggests the game is about designing a cool video game. Well if you were playing on a pirated version of Game Dev Tycoon, when you tried to sell your creation (in game) you would make no money because the game was getting pirated. Sort of a funny cheeky way to handle those pirates! Still it would be lovely to have a PC version of GTA V. I certainly would buy it in a heartbeat, as I have a really hard time pirating games.

I heard this too, there is no PC version yet but so many people downloaded the torrent anyway probably thinking 'yay' and paid the price.
And I don think Rockstar had anything to do with this either, some other 3rd party no doubt.

I would REALLY enjoy a PC version. Not sure why they never produce one to be honest. They would make so much money if they were to port it over. Sucks these people got hit by this though.

That's why I have a Mac and buy my games!

But really, it is kind of silly that Rockstar waited for PC. I know plenty of people angry about this, and eager to get their hands on the game. Too easy of a target for people who make viruses.

Whilst I admit that this is quite funny, it is still saddening to know that some people fell for this scam. Although we cannot deny the fact that one news article said that the torrent came from a credible uploader, so we really cannot blame people for being gullible. I guess this fiasco is trying to teach us a lesson on the virtue of patience.

I really can't believe people thought it was out. Goes to show that you should research things before diving right in.

Wait so they mindlessly downloaded the torrent even though it is fairly easy to confirm if an internet version is out or not. Well, they have only themselves to blame for it.

It's kind of funny if you think about it.

A theory I came across while browsing comments about it online is that they are all probably mostly kids who don't know any better, probably throw in some adults there too of course, just for good measure. Nonetheless, I can see how excitement can get the better of a person sometimes, but really people should just be smarter, in general, especially for illegal things.

This is more than enough to prove that we want a GTA V version for the PC! haha
I wouldn't fall for this to be honest, but people are really excited for it and just though about downloading this "leak" immediately, can't blame them, the game is amazing. :p

Interesting theory but I am pretty sure it was mostly just adults who were too lazy to confirm it from a good source. Either ways it's still amusing.

I really can not feel any sympathy for anyone that downloaded that game because honestly they are quite stupid. I mean if the company that made the game clearly states there is not a version for that platform then downloading an illegal version that may or may not even be real is plain ignorant.

Makes me feel lucky that I was never duped to that degree in my game downloading days. I would hope these people learned a valuable lesson about trusting downloads from the internet. It seems like people are routinely scammed because of a lack of education regarding the dangers of such endeavors.

I read a few days about this and thousands of computers were infected with the virus. I don't know why you would download from torrent a game that wasn't released for PC. Rockstar hasn't announced a release date until now and nobody (individual person or private group) can port a console game to PC, they should have known better.

Natural selection right there :D Did those people seriously expect that there would a GTA V on PC even though it's not even announced yet? Well, I guess they got what they deserve. Imagine if that was the real PC version of the game, 7000 people would've downloaded it without paying a cent to Rockstar Games, that's 420 thousand dollars worth of damage to the company!
