Guinness Record For Biggest Video Game Collection

Check this out guys! This guy has almost 11,000 games in his collection, and I don't think that number even includes the consoles and controllers and other accessories he has which surely he does. I've seen a few comments saying that his collection is a waste because he won't be playing and enjoying most of them anyway, but I think the collection in itself provides him with enough joy and that's all that matters. Furthermore, it's his money and his life anyway. Plus I think it's pretty neat to hear about such a collection and I even hope to see it someday even if just in video form. What do you guys think?

Now Sports Illustrated tells us that Michael Thomasson has been certified by the Guinness Book of World Records, which now has a Gamer’s Edition believe it or not. Thomasson has a haul of 10,607 games.

Thomasson teaches game history and game design at Canisius College in Buffalo (bet you didn’t know there were classes on this), and he actually sold off his collection twice, first to buy a Sega Genesis, then again years later to pay for his wedding.

Thomasson buys two games a day on average, and he keeps himself on a budget of $3,000 a year. As Sports Illustrated and The Huffington Post tell us, his collection is worth $700,000 to $800,000. It’s a trip to think that so many little plastic cartridges could add up to this kind of money. The real question is how much does a collection this big cost a collector? We don’t want to know, because it’s scary to think we could have bought a nice house with all this disposable income…

I think it's more for the joy of having the collection than getting to actually play it with people like him. I've learned from watching History Channel shows that some people just love to hoard and collect while some like to actually use the items. For example, there are probably a lot of gun collectors out there who appreciate having a closet full of antique guns as opposed to their counterpart collectors who like to just have a moderate collection that they shot off from time to time.

Agreed. I have a little of the collecting spirit. I have boxes of craft beer bottles I have collected since I started getting into craft beers. I like the designs on the bottles and labels. I also would like to get into collecting video games and in a way, I have started hoarding games. If I get a coupon from GameStop, I usually buy them but half the time I never get around to playing them (still have 3 I bought 3/4 months ago and never played, lol). Collecting is fun. The search for something you are collecting is even more fun.
