Its just not a matter of a software update the actual console has a few changes.
The newer one weighs 10% less, consumes 8% less power and is quieter.
There are also a few exterior changes, the power and eject buttons are mechanical, not digital, which is supposed to fix the random disc eject issues some people have had.
Also the HDD cover has a matt finish, instead of glosssy.
I have the original one, no issues with noise, weight... who cares? If I was buying new though I would certainly look for the newest revision of the product.
I have the older model, CUH-1115A, which is the same model as the one you're looking into (the last two digits are the region). I got it with the Destiny bundle. I've had no problems with mine (like the random disc ejection or anything. Mine has the digital buttons) and I even personally like the aesthetics of the older models as opposed to the 12xx series. Aside from the aesthetics, the internals are undoubtedly updated for energy efficiency and ease/cheaper manufacturing. But when you really think about it, 8% energy savings is really not a lot. I think one thing I read was the average person spends $30 a year on their energy bills with a game console (may be 50, but any who, it's 8% savings of that....not a lot). And the 10% lighter, who cares? You aren't backpacking with it. It's going to go on your TV stand and stay there
