Hoping to see less FPS' this cycle

It occurs to me after reading a lot of forums that there have been a lot of FPS' released this past generation and I kinda want less of them this time around. I get that it's all about hardcore, and grit, and if the story isn't dark somehow the game isn't worth your time. But is it so wrong that I just want a game that's fun for fun's sake.

No no no! There needs to be more this cycle. The graphics on the PS4 are great and you can never have enough brown, grey, black in a gaming cycle, Legend. I'm gonna go sulk.

Do you have any idea how brown brown can get now? Or how black it'll be in games now? Really.

See now you just jinxed everything. 40% more military shooters, 25% more sci-fi shooters, more zombies, more maps, no Doom, no classic Wolf 3D, no decent Duke Nukem, not even a Super Noah's Ark revival.

Or how black it'll be in games now? Really.

...blacker than the blackest black times infinity.

It'll be the blackest of the blackest of the darkest of nights. I'm still waiting for Call of Zombie Front: Halo Cry. But seriously what happened to imagination, have FPS' become so valuable financially to companies that no one is willing to try something new? In other words I want a new Katamari darnit'.

Yeah, FPS' are financially reliable for companies. Plus the genre is consistent. It's like sports titles only not released every year and with a story (sports titles are another thing with me and Angry Video Game Nerd made the point I always thought of in his video on Atari Sports). The thing is, if you put it out and you can put it out on multiple platforms and have people eat it up they'll keep making it. It's like one of two safety genres in video games.

I'd prefer to see more old school FPS' this generation. Ones more in the vein that SpaceTiger listed. I can get into Killzone or Halo since there's a sci-fi twist to those. Military shooters? Not so much.

Plus there's far to many 14 year olds in online play that talked the worst smack. Of course you're ultra skilled kid, you have no other responsibilities in the day but to go to school, listen and write, and come home. You don't even have to excel at school, just listen enough, do just enough work, and your day is done at 2 PM or 3 PM then it's like full evening of your favorite FPS', bickering about 720p vs. 1080p, and trolling Amazon and the opposing console fanbase.

Those are pretty much the FPS' I can get into. A good Duke Nukem, Golden Eye, or Wolfenstein 3D where one guy escapes with more gold than one person should be able to carry on their own. To legendoflore's point, there will be more truly innovate titles in this generation, probably not a "remember when SNES and PSX were RPG meccas"-abundance of titles, but you get truly enjoyable, outside the box games every console run.

...in the last generation it was only via the indie developers, but you still get them.

I would love more innovation. FPS's are cool but god knows that we've gotten into a rut. They're all so similar no a days, with companies being unwilling to change up the formula. Let's hope that this new cycle really pushes innovation. FPS' don't have to go away but surely they can figure out a way to change up the formula.

I like FPS, but I agree that there is a bit much of that. Majority of launch titles are shooters. I'm glad I didn't buy one because Warframe is a good enough game to satisfy me for now.

I agree with you, last generation was dominated by the fps genre, and it became boring in my opinion.
Maybe this time we'll see more diversity in games as the time passes by with new releases.

Meh, just don't play them if you don't want to. I played maybe 3-4 FPS games this past generation because there were plenty of games that weren't FPS :p

It just seemed like every other title that came out was an FPS and yes they can be good, great even but a little more diversity would be nice. The problem was that devs got into a formula where they thought that if their game was an FPS that would increase sales. I'm hoping that this new console cycle and the previous years successful non-FPS games make devs realize that they can go outside the box and still sell.

I wouldn't say that FPS ruined the whole gaming experience, i think DLC, Season passes and Quick Time Events did it. Seriously, one more generation and you are basically buying a glorified movie experience where you just press some buttons from time to time because everything needs to be cinematic nowadays.

Everybody wants to go with the 'trends'. If third person games take over, then that's what everyone will make. I don't see FPS games going anywhere, it puts us in a new world when it comes to gaming. I love 3rd person though.

That's true FPS are sticking around and it has gotten into this ditch deep rut of two favors or subgenres (three if you include Far Cry which was a big departure from running through corridors, running through scrap heaps and desert towns...actually preferred Blood Dragon to FC3).

To actually mix it up at least, I'd like first person slashers. Take whatever is Mount & Blade does with the combat (especially in multiplayer) and make that a major thing before PC.

When QTEs started to become common during the PS2 era I had a feeling they would be a big thing in the future. Prior to that they were a regular part of the Sega CD and were toned to bit, but still a heavy focus with Shenmue. After that people got crazy with it. I've spent like 95% of the game up to now either shooting or slashing my way through and fiddling with armor, ain't nobody got time for a button to just jump out at you at random on the screen as if you're expecting it in the middle of battle.

It's like how I feel about zombie anything in games. Sure you have the occasional good maybe even great one, but more often than not they suck or are average at best. We need a break, we need companies to take a few more risks and try new ips even if their not so successful. And if they have a huge hit or an ip, there's no reason why they can't improve on it. Super Mario 3D Land is another Mario game, but it's innovative and refreshes an old formula.

The problem is that people like FPS, even if they're always the same game with a new skin (CoD I'm looking at you).
What we need is more games like Fallout NV, Morrowind, Kingdom hearts, etc. Not everything has to have multiplayer.

Exactly, but multiplayer is big business so you often see the single player campaign suffering so that devs can focus on the multiplayer. That's what happened to COD: Ghosts, good multiplayer but terrible when it came to single player. I want more originality and even if it's an FPS who say's it has to follow the mold? There are some FPS' out there that manage to be original.

Yeah I hope that less FPS games come out too, but as others have said, it dominates the multiplayer scene. Third person multiplayer is was less superior to first person so that's a factor. I hope that the FPS games that come out this gen have a better storyline as well, like Far Cry 3,
