How complex do you like your games?

I was thinking about the games I feel best when completing, and most of them ended up being games that have pretty deep rule sets. Beating a few challenge levels of Peggle feels pretty good, but spending the same amount of time creating a successful plague in Pandemic feels like more of an event. It's an effort reward thing, I get that much. But I was just wondering how complex does a game have to be for you to feel accomplished for surmounting the high learning curve without it becoming so inaccessible it's not fun anymore?

I like my games to have a depth that makes it a bit challenging but not to complicated that I have to look up everything to even go play the game. If it's too complex, then I feel like it takes away from the gameplay because they put too much emphasis on the game complexity and not how the game is played out.

Honestly I think the question is subjective, in my opinion it all ties down to the gameplay mechanics and overall what they were trying to accomplish with the game.

There are games which their gameplay would benefit from complex and deeper mechanics, while others could be better games by simplifying some things.

Can you imagine a game like Serious Sam being overly complex? Or maybe Zelda, being a simple button smasher? Balance is the key.

I like old RE and Silent hill style.
had action, and had some riddles to keep you busy at times. too bad these days all games are just mindless shooters.

I prefer simpler games, which is why I love hack and slash genres. I mostly just like to play games that I can run through without having to think about things too much and merely just upgrade along the way. If the game is complex, then I tend to get bored with it early on because I don't like having to think or complete too many mini goals.

Well, if the game is too overly complex or too simple then there's no fun on it. I like my games with equal parts of challenging stages and simple, fun and care free moments. I don't like playing games that gives me so much stress, like those games that are unnecessarily hard, like Ninja Gaiden, hate that game.

I guess it depends on what mood I'm in.

Sometimes I just want to sit down to a simple game, relax, and just blast a few guys and then call it a night. But there are times when I want to get lost in a world, and I can't get lost if it's not a believable world and to be a believable world there needs to be difficulty and a certain level of complexity.

It does take some energy to get invested in a game like that though and once I get in that mode I don't want to put the controller down. :D

But everything has to be in balance you know? If it's not an emotionally reward game from a story standpoint, then if it has a lot of complexity I feel like a rat in a maze trying to get the cheese. Which is not a fun experience by any means. Vice verse it applies as well, if it's emotionally rewarding but generally easy to steam roll through (I'm looking at you Square Enix) then I feel like a child being dragged around by the hand everywhere to look at scenery, completely disengaged to the experience.

But really most games as long as they have the intelligence to build it in a balanced manner like that are worth the play, as long as you're in the right mood.

I would LOVE if the next CoD got more simple than Ghost.

MW was almost perfect, I loved MW2, except the noobtube-OMA and shit. Never played much BO, but MW3 and BOII was great too. Ghost is just not as appealing to me.

I guess the next should be simpler and more skill-biased. Less setting up. I want a more pure experience.

Also, they should make an All-Time CoD with all the best maps, favourite guns, perks etc. instead of inventing new stuff all the time. There should always be new stuff, but they should keep or bring back a lot of the good stuff!

This, I miss the oldschool Silent Hill games and even the scavenger hunt Resident Evils where you had to backtrack to get chess shaped plugs to open a door in the sewer. I'm a big fan of the oldschool rpgs based off of the AD&D system but at the same time I feel like streamlining stuff can help, like with what Blizz did with the new talent system. Much prefer that.

I like my games to be very complex.

I like my games to be very complex because i like a challenge. I find that games that are easy become boring very quickly. I hate that. That is a waste of money. In my opinion. Why would i buy a game for $60 that i am going to be bored with in a week.

That is why i prefer games that have a lot of complexity. That way i will always find a new challenge in the game. Which will prevent me from pending all money in new games just to find a challenge.
