How Durable is the Sony PS 4

I have "blasted" through many PSs over the past years than I have Microsoft, Nintendo, Sega and the like. In the past 5 years or so, I have had quite a number of PS2s and 3s. I wouldn't lie to you, I enjoyed all the games but I came to realize that PSs are far easily damaged if not easily break down than the other gaming consoles.

Do you believe that this is true, or do you think that I am the one who is careless?

You mean durable as, falling to the ground resistance? I've carried my PS3 back and forth every year since I've bought the console and never had any issue with it, there was even a time when I streamed lots of movies and then started playing leaving the console up and running for like 12h straight and even then the console was doing fine, I think what's most important is to leave your console on a place with very good air flow so the console doesn't overheat, I read somwhere once that you should leave it as high as possible because this way the console temperature would not increase as much as if you've let her closer to the ground, that concern about overheating should be the most important, other than that it's just the usual usage concerns when you're moving the console around.

Hrmm. I actually find the PS3's to be strong machines. The Xbox, on the other hand, I've been through 3 as they are more vulnerable to breaks and all that.

Just be sure to treat it with respect and care and nothing wrong should ever happen to it honestly. bknight also brings up a valid point that you should be wary of the temperatures you keep it in, as that can cause problems with any kind of technology. Ive always known Playstations to be durable and have never had problems with any of mine so im not sure what to tell ya!

It's actually the other way around for me. I found the 360 console to be really damageable. I have replaced it 3 times.

I had to buy a new PS2 once, but considering how many moves it'd gone through as well as how many hours it'd been forced to endure (I marathon game) as well as the fact it's always sat on the floor... really it'd preformed beyond the what could be expected of it. So yeah I personally believe Sony to be a very durable brand. After all Sony is a brand associated with quality last time I checked.

I guess we don't know just yet. But judging on the durability of the PS3, we could bet that the PS4 would be even more durable and heavy duty. Speaking of heavy duty, have you seen this video wherein some rich guy is dropping a hammer on a PS3? Wicked sick but check it out:
PS3 is made with some high quality materials don't you think?

I think that the the PS4 will be very durable because of the how the descendants of the PS3 have generally been durable. Like I have had the PS2 and the PS3 and they were really durable and had to never get replacement even once. For the Xbox 360, it was a different story how it actually died on me once when I dropped it when I was moving my consoles around. This has never happened to me with the PS3 or the PS2.

Holy crap, that video is awesome! I was not expecting the hammer to just bounce off like it did damn lol. Just goes to show ya how durable it really is.

I dunno, but my PS3 has lasted through a lot. I've dropped that sucker more times than I can even count, while the 360 is a flimsy piece of plastic that breaks when you touch or look at it the wrong way. Long live durable Sony products! lol

PS3's are tough machines! All you got to do is treat it with care and keep it clean and it will not break (well not that easily). I have took mine on a road trip and a trip to the floor, ahem, and it is fine. Just have good airflow and clean all the dust out of your PS3 and it will run smoothly.

I've never had a "fatal" problem with any of my consoles. Besides my PS2 and PS3 working hard to cool off and making loud fan noise (which is a given in the summer), I've never had any issues. I can understand if your system has a RROD type of situation, but people who just manage to ruin their console somehow puzzle me. Keep it in a safe and cool place, don't tamper with it, make sure it doesn't collect excessive amounts of dust... the basics. My PS1 still works fine.

I guess we can't really know until we each have one for ourselves. Judging by the previous Sony consoles, they are pretty durable. I haven't had any console have any hardware problems to date. I had a overheating issue with my PS3 a while back, but it's not really an issue now. With all those years of improvement, i'm sure the PS4 will be very durable.

These types of videos always make me cringe, but the way that the PS3 took that hammer like a boss and shrugged it off, spinning the hammer out of the really made me laugh.

And i still have all my old Playstation consoles, and they all work fine.

There's really only one way to know for sure and that's by running the final console through its paces. Since we can't do that yet, there's no way of knowing whether or not the PS4 will be more durable than the PS3. That being said, my experience with the PS3 has been pretty good. If you take care of your console, it should last several years; if not you're doomed to suffer the consequences. Nowadays, these are basically just computers in a pretty case which are designed to be easier for gamers to adapt to, so if you don't treat it like a computer, you're going to have a bad experience.

Yeah, agreed. Treat your consoles like an even more delicate computer, clean it often and don't keep it on ALL the time and it'll last a good long while.

Unless it's a 360 :P

I'm always surprised how 360 fanboys are quick to rely on trickery that is almost fantasy driven in how ridiculous it is. They invariably tell tales of using towels or other items which only make the console hotter until its components literally bake. Understanding how technology works is really helpful when taking care of modern day consoles. These are not toys, they are electronics. Treat them as such and you'll have a much better experience.

Nobody I know has had troubles with their PS3s beyond the occasional game freezing, which happened a lot more frequently on the 360. There are a lot of horror stories about console malfunctions let alone the RROD. Not so much with Sony...

I've been fortunate enough to never have to replace my 360, though I did see the red rings once. That scared me, but I just turned it off, made sure everything was plugged in correctly, and turned it back on to find it working perfectly fine.

It's generally not fanboys doing this - fanboys will just buy the console another 5 times without realizing they shouldn't be murdering the poor consoles so quickly. Nah, it's generally people who want to squeeze as much as they can out of the console because they don't plan on investing in another. That said the issue regarding the towels is that because of shoddy design and shoddier materials it will work for a time. It's only through heating and cooling that a specific piece malfunctions leading to RROD and such. Tch - the interesting thing is according to some sources Microsoft still has learned to work on that.

In terms of durability, I'm not sure. But it sounds to me like you need to be more careful with your valuables. These systems are made to play games, they're not supposed to take abuse. I'm not sure exactly what is causing you to go through so many consoles, but I'd definitely start thinking in terms of "how can I be more careful around my PS?"

Personally, I haven't had a broken system ever, but then again mine never leaves the entertainment center and it's high enough to where kids can't reach it. When I spend that much money on something, I make sure I take care of it to the best of my ability. Granted some things out of your control happen, it's almost mind blowing to think someone could go through multiple systems
