If you buy games based on ratings, why?

I don't tend to buy games just because of their ratings from other people, but I do like to check reviews, screenshots, trailers and actual gameplay if possible before buying a game. I would be like this with any product I want to buy that's not cheap, it just helps me guarentee I know what I am buying.

I've never really payed attention to game reviews or ratings. That goes with everything for me though, if it is any kind of media someones opinion of it doesn't really matter to me. I usually find that I almost always disagree with the rating for most games anyway. Except for the big hitters like Call of Duty, but even then most reviews either give a little too much praise or rip it apart. I'd rather play it myself and decide whether or not I like it, everything else is just noise.

I buy based on ratings to make sure I am getting my money's worth. I hate getting a game and then regretting my decision afterwards. I have to always make sure I am making the right decision when purchasing a videogame.

I have never bought a single title solely based on numeric ratings of various journalist websites or review blogs. It's pointless. I prefer to see the game for myself first, be it on console, PC or handhelds. Ratings are an extremely mediocre way of criticizing something, and since opinions cannot adequately be summed up in a numeric value, they often end up being incorrect, and hilarious when compared to each other.

I remember IGN giving Black Ops 2 a 93, and then blaming another game on the point of being "too iterative" and "not having original ideas", with a score of 40 something. It's frankly ridiculous.

I usually don't pay attention to ratings/reviews. A lot of games that I love have gotten low ratings, so I just don't see the point.
