Is Destiny really that good?

Okay I'll admit it I haven't played the game yet (shocker!) But it's for a pretty good reason. So is the game really that good? I've watched a lot of game play footage and I'm planning on getting a copy when it's released, I was just wondering is it really something new? I'm watching the game play footage and it seems like the same as any other shooters, of course I'm saying this out of speculation since I've never played the game. So how was it?

The game is good, played both the alpha and beta, buts it not the industry changing experience people claim it to be.

It's a step in the right direction tho

Well, criticizing the game before you have a chance to have a crack at it, is really unfair mate. You have to try the game first. I had a chance to play the beta and I can say that I am already sold on it. The shooting mechanics and the amazing setting is really impressive to say the least.

I'm not really criticizing the game since I haven't played it yet it's more of an observation I guess. I didn't get my hands on the beta but since it's coming out soon I'd be giving it a shot. On your perspective do you think it's pretty unique or does it feel the same as any other games?

Yep I agree with this guy/girl here. It's not the big leap that the first Halo was in terms of redefining the FPS, but it just feels cohesive and brings enough new things so that it catches people's attention. The big draw is the MMO style gameplay that Destiny has. Throw in the Borderlands style weapon loots with Bungie's storytelling and you'll see why people are looking forward to it in a time where most FPS games are already established franchises.

Yeah it's good. I also played in the alpha and beta and liked what I experienced. Although it really did leave me wanting. It feels comfortable, responsive, tight, but in my opinion what they showed off really wasn't anything outstanding. Will it blow you away? This is now up in the air. Is it worth picking up--absolutely. I would not say it innovates, but then again both the alpha and the beta were very limited. Most games that are MMOs or claim to be release a beta and give you the whole game to explore, to break. Destiny gave you a chunk of brown scenery to look at and distorted story sequences to experience. My biggest issue is that none of the classes really felt that different--even when the beta level cap was hit. I do not understand the class system if they all feel and play very similarly. I was and am still hoping for a more diverse class structure. Time will tell. Its basically Halo considering all of the enemies are Halo variants and in fact move like Halo enemies.

They have taken in a lot of fan feedback and have promised to address and adopt some changes, although which I cannot say for sure.

I was in the beta and while the game was fun it's nothing groundbreaking that I've noticed. One thing I really liked is the sound design. I'm still considering whether to buy it since I'm not into MP too much. I know there's SP but I'm not sure how long it can keep me hooked. I need a game to keep me occupied till Sept 30th.

There are different subclasses within the Hunter, Titan, and Warlock archetypes. I believe there's also another subclass after that as well, but don't quote me on that. There are subclasses for sure though. I do agree that the gameplay feels very Halo-ish though. Even down to the crosshair not being quite in the center of the screen (this really annoyed me about Halo but at least Destiny has ADS).

I am not blind to the fact that Destiny is going to lack content when it will finally be out. I think wee all know that. But as far as the gameplay is concerned, Destiny is an Ace.

Played the alpha and beta. They did this right. A shooter with equipment drops and character development. Live action role playing. Not alot of stupid dialog and cut scenes. You can just log on and kill things to level up or take on random bounty missions. And there are the occasional on the fly random event where you are fighting with soldiers on your side to stop a hostile act from the enemy. Just like in mmorps. Or progress through the main story line.

I just played the game and I can't help but feel a bit of a Borderland-ish vibe from it. Of course it's a different game altogether but it's there.

If you go on YouTube there are a lot of videos of the game play if anyone is still undecided like I am.

I don't know still. Sure the graphics look good, but its just like COD to me, but with aliens that jump around and you can punch them.

heres some game play of mine

If you think it's a linear level by level go through the story game and do the side missions if you want and a bit of co-op / mp thrown in, then your wrong.

there's 2 key points to destiny that i think people who haven't got the game, and some that have that are missing. The first point here is very key

Point 1 - Bungie have publically said they are on PURPOSE not giving out too much detail of what to expect in the game as they want the gamers to discover this stuff for themselves. This is a KEY point for an MMO/RPG. As an RPG / MMO Destiny is so far from my expereince doing what the Elder Scrools online didn't. That's making you explore and discover things as you go. For example last night a friend at level 16 unlocked a new "boss" play list of things to do that i'd not heard about before. Add this sense of wonder of what is around the corner , the next level, the next cave, the next planet... and it all snowballs for one big exploration.

Do you remember the old days of gaming back on the zx spectrum where there were whispers of " ohh if you beat that level on that game you get... " and without youtube back then you had to find out for yourself and discover stuff. This is what it's like with Destiny. No one REALLY knows right now, not even the reviewers, what IS out there what IS coming etc. There seems to be a myth already about when players reach level 20 something will open up...

All this builds up, and if your hooked into the game, by it's story, by it's lore, it is actually all very tantilizing and exciting. It's Old school gaming i feel for a new genration, and as it's not simple lead you by the nose progression, some gamers they are poo pooing what they don't quite understand. I'm playing it a lot at the moment and there are still loads of things i don't understand yet, but it's FUN, finding them out.

Point 2 - Destiny laughs in the face of lead you by the nose linear gameplay .. If you want that go play COD SP. You literaly stumble across stuff that isn't advertised sometimes. Again Bungie have said they have done this on purpose to make players explore and figure things out for themselves.

The game is set up so you really do feel like your all part of one big thing fighting for a common cause. This is set up by the expertly made game, world, elements, and how it's unfolding before me.

Laslty .. i know this doesn't actually guarentee a good game, but GTA5 cost $265,000,000 to make and at the time waas / is regarded as a very polished accomplished game. Destiny has cost.. $500,000,000... it ain't going to be some small time piece of rubbish. I didn't like halo, never liked Bungie, but i feel confident, as long as the enemies and missions they have to come and keep coming are vaired, this is not going to be a 1 week wonder game.

I've played enough now that I think I can chime in.

Destiny is becoming more fun the further in I get. I'm level 16 right now. So we'll see if that continues.

There is definitely a lot of valid criticism of Destiny, and I largely can't argue with any of it apart from a whiny "But it's fun".

I just hit level 18 tonight with my Titan (Defender sub-class). I agree with your statement, the further you get in the more enjoyable it gets - especially once some of the PvP stuff opens up.

Definitely going to be some Reputation and item grinding to get some of the Legendary/Exotic items.

Play time for me, to level 18.. Is about 15 hours so far.

I also like what they did wit the integration of your character information on their website, and how you unlock stuff in game and access it there (although that content is more story/lore items that are available for reading.. Still cool).

The graphics though are absolutely fantastic.

HA! I'm only at level 12 and I have to agree with you, other than being a really fun game it's nothing special.

Destiny is a perfectly solid and polished game, albeit with nothing super special about it. If this game had come out a couple years ago, we'd probably be saying something different. I'd agree that things get better the farther you go, and I do enjoy how levels have areas that are level prohibitive because higher level enemies guard them. That makes going back through levels interesting enough for me.

I finally decided and going to pass on Destiny. I read lots of reviews yesterday, watched countless YouTube videos and almost everyone is saying the same things.

I am not knocking it as I am sure I enjoy many games, Knack for example, others don't, just yet to "get the hype" I guess.
