Is the PS3 already considered Last Generation?

Before the PS4, we have always considered the PS3 (along with the Xbox 360 and the Wii) as current generation consoles. But now that the PS4 is among us, how will you consider the PS3? Is it already considered last gen with the PS4 as the current gen? Or is the PS3 still considered current gen with the PS4 considered as next gen?

I don't think PS4 is quite here yet, everything is still sinking in, and their competitor console isn't even released yet. So I'd say in general, we're still not completely in that next gen era yet, but technically speaking, PS4 is now current gen for Sony, yes.

Too me I think that any console is next generation if there is new one. Kind of like your the next generation from your parents. If we are talking about functionality then I think that the PS3 wouldn't lose it
s next generation title just yet. The PS4 has been catching a lot of flack for problems at launch, so until those are worked out then I wont consider it the next generation, functionality wise.

Yeah, it is last generation, technically. Us PS3 users will still be support for the next couple of years, so there's nothing to be worried about! :)

Well, release happened, so mathematics says it is. The PS3 and 360 have been on the edge of "oh god when will the new one come out" for quite a while now, so most people are happy to let them go and focus on the next consoles instead. I'm not that sad to let it go either, 2005 hardware have been holding back games for quite some time now (almost 8 years, wow). Good games aren't about graphics of course, but it's been a technical constraint we wanted to get rid of for a while now.

I, for one, welcome the current gen.

Yes I considered the PS3 outdated at this point! The PS4 is the current next gen console! The prices of PS3 are dropping left and right and nobody wants them anymore so that makes them very outdated! I however will probably buy some of those older games I never wanted to pay full price for before though now that they will be cheaper as well!

As most have said, once the "Next-Gen" system comes out, it's pretty much considered the current gen. Though, to be fair, the PS3 and 360 were considered "Next-Gen" for the longest time after release. So even though it's TECHNICALLY now current, it's still considered Next-Gen. Confusing to think about, but as someone else said, the generation gap is what it's all about.

I think PS3 is still considered to be 'present gen' because it's still widely used. Until more than half of PS3 owners convert to PS4, I don't think we can call it last gen just yet.

I think the Playstation 3 is still a great console I think around mid 2014 it will be a thing of the past though. Seeing as how it has been around for so long. I think the new systems will leave people no other choice but to leave that console in the closet.

well techinically it is but I for one still have a leap of games to play and I won't be buying aps4 for a while so until I do I consirded ps3 to still be this genration for me

I guess it's really comes down to how many gamers are on ps4 and Xbox One compared to PS3 and Xbox 360. Once more people play on the next gen consoles its safe to assume that they will become current gen consoles.

My feeling exactly. Once there are more people using them, then they'll feel more current gen.

guys its not really a matter of interpretation. The playstation 4 has released. Its a new iteration of the playstation, a new generation.

It is the CURRENT generation of the Playstation. next-gen is whatever sony has in the pipeline. Since the ps4 has released its no longer next gen. thats like saying today is the next day, or that this month is next month since its not completely over yet.

Since the ps4 is CURRENT gen, the ps3 cant be CURRENT gen too, its now officially last gen.

Why do people put more interpreting into the term generation than need be?

It really depends on whether you consider this generation underway or not. The Wii U has been out for a year, but Xbox One only launched today, and the PS4 still hasn't launched where I live.

By definition, the 'next generation' is underway since all three consoles have technically launched, but it hasn't really had time to settle. Plus, 360 and PS3 games are far more abundant than their next generation counterparts, so you could argue that the 'current' generation is far more dominant.

All said and done though, the PS4, X1 and Wii U are the current generation of consoles, making the Wii, PS3 and 360 the previous generation.

Considering the fact that all 3 of the new generation consoles are out in the market, it is safe to say that PS3 is now last generation. Its really as obvious as that.

Everyone is slowly moving over to the PS4, so I consider that to be current gen.

I somehow disagree with you. The fact that people are slowly moving to the PS4 does not impact the reality that the PS3 is still outstanding since there those guys who still holdon to the PS3. But just to mentioned I am as well seeing a situation when the PS3 would be an outdated game fashion.

my head hurts you guys. Next means coming up, future. The new consoles are here. its not up for interpretation. They are CURRENTLY available. The word has nothing to do with other consoles. The CURRENT generation of the xbox is the XBone, the CURRENT generation of the playstation is the PS4, the CURRENT generation of the wii is Wii U.

Plenty of people still use the PS2 is that still 'present' gen. The PS5 (or equivalent) is next gen, the PS4 is current gen, the PS3 is last gen, the PS2 is 2 gen's ago etc. etc. Pretty straight forward really.
