It seems like a nice handheld console, but is the game lineup worth buying? I haven't done too much research on the subject.

The game lineup is entirely dependant on your taste, but I think the line-up is pretty damn solid, though most of the games are pretty niche.
There's the well-known barrage of fantastic indie games, like Spelunky, Hotline Miami and Terraria. There's the fantastic JRPGs like Persona 4 Golden and Ys. There's the visual novels like Virtue's Last Reward and Danganronpa. There's the "hunting" games like Soul Sacrifice, Toukiden and Ragnarok Odyssey. Of course, there's the fantastic first-party exclusives too like Uncharted: Golden Abyss, Killzone Mercenary (best handheld FPS ever), Gravity Rush and Wipeout 2048.
There's a lot more games than the ones I mentioned, many exclusives or "partially exclusive" (like the upgraded ports of the Atelier games, for example) but these are some of the most popular games and genres the system has at the moment. Of course, remote play functionality is fantastic if you have a PS4, too.
You should check the catalog for yourself, though, really. I love games like Soul Sacrifice, Toukiden, Persona 4 Golden and Virtue's Last Reward but I know they are rather niche.
Keep in mind you also have (partial) access to the PSP's catalog on the Vita.

Thanks for the detailed post! I've decided to pick up a Vita this Friday when I get my paycheck, what are your personal favorite games on the Vita?

Gravity Rush (which I actually haven't played much yet, sadly), Persona 4 Golden, Dragon's Crown and Virtue's Last Reward are my favorites.
I especially recommend P4G, if you like JRPGs.

Yup the Vita is a pretty solid gaming choice if you don't like being tied down to your TV set, I mean in this age when we're becoming increasingly mobile, theres definitely an appeal, and alot of the games offered on stand alone consoles are also coming to Vita, there are even dedicated titles, like some Vice City stories.

That's why I like the PS Vita: RPGs (oh and indies). You get a PS Vita, a DS, 3DS, and a PS3 and you're in RPG heaven.

Maybe I should pick up a Vita, I do love some RPGs and I've noticed they're pretty low used on Amazon.

This is true. That posse of handhelds and consoles are what you want if you're an RPG fan. Any combination of those work. If you dig indie games PS Vita especially, but 3DS is getting some indie support.

How does the functionality work for PSP games? I was unaware that there was any compatibility there. The Vita pairs well with the PS4 due to remote play, but I do see people complain about the overall game selection. Hopefully that changes in 2014. I have PS+, and sometimes the free Vita games aren't up to par with the free PS3 and PS4 games that we get.

I think it has a lot of games in its library now, so yes, I think this would be a good time to buy, and that it is worth it. I like handheld consoles because I prefer to play lying down while I try to get sleepy, so I'm planning on buying one myself. Not to mention it can also be used to stream PS4 games. I'm personally still thinking whether I should get Vita or Vita TV though, so you might want to look into that as well, but if the question is just in terms of the library, I think there's enough choices now to warrant a purchase. Also, seeing as they will only be pushing it more this generation, I bet the library will be increasing significantly in the next few years.
The biggest barrier to entry for me with the Vita is that most of the games are just ports. If I can just get the games on a console that I already own then there's no reason for me to get the new console. It being portable does help its case, but I already own a PSP. The only game I've seen so far that is exclusive and I want is Ys Memories of Celceta.

I am a proud owner of the PS Vita. A lot of people hate on it but I love it. It is a great companion for the PS4 due to the cross play feature. Some people may not use it but I use it quite a bit for playing PS4 games while watching TV or when family come over and I have to show my face etc. However, even without the PS4 it is awesome. The graphics are great and despite not many well known games for the console, the indie games made for it are amazing. Sony does use indie gaming as a key feature for the Vita which is why some people don't like it as they prefer games like Call of Duty which we have a Vita version for but to be honest, it sucks.
Either way, I say it is well worth it.

The Playstation Vita seems to be a good gaming console because it's a newer technology and offers full touchscreen in which it does more than just gaming. I don't have one and wouldn't want to get one because I have heard there aren't many games that supported Playstation Vita, which it's been almost over 6 months and it's not as popular as the Nintendo 3DS. I don't know why or maybe because people don't seem the find the games they want to play on the Playstation Vita, which I would think it makes sense because the game selections are very limited. I would like to get one if it has some of the PS1 games, which I would definitely want to get one because I can also use it to surf the internet.

It's worth it if you're on the go a lot and you would love to spend those travelling times playing ps2-like games. I was a huge fan of the ps2 so I prefer those games over the 3ds games which are very different in character. Honestly, the 3ds and vita have such different games that it's pretty choosing one over the other if you know your preference.

If you have a ps, I don't know if it's really that worth it. It's basically just a portable ps2 in many ways. I love the ps but I'd rather just have a ds for a handheld because it offers much more variety and it's a new interface. The vita interface is basically something that we've all been used to with simply prettier graphics. The 3DS is more innovative and allows for greater interaction so I'd have to so no to this.
