Lack Of Light Gun Games On PS3

Why are there not more light gun games? I've expected that they would be making them by the hundreds by now, considering:

  • Duck Hunt was so successful and universally known
  • Time Crisis on PS1 was awesome
  • Flat screens which are also wider, so I assume it would be more pleasant and probably easier to calibrate
  • Better technology
  • Can actually benefit from being in 3D
  • Wireless guns
  • Players can just shoot without having to figure stuff out, solve puzzles, do combos, etc.
  • More profits from selling 1 or 2 guns per console owner like they were able to do with Rock Band/Guitar Hero

I'm not talking about FPS shooters either. Even if they can utilize gun accessories, there's still a gun sticking out on screen and that seems pretty awkward. Not to mention, you'll still have to navigate through maps yourself, and press many buttons that are probably a lot easier to do on an actual controller. Games I'm referring to would be like Time Crisis, Lethal Enforcer, House of the Dead (I think they are called Gun Con 2 games?), or even casual ones like the ones on Nintendo. What gives? I think they're missing out on this by focusing too much on advancing. Your thoughts?

Light gun games are rare on every console. And I'm sure it stays this way.

I think it is just some risk to produce a game that requires accessoires that aren't that common and maybe even cost a lot. How many guys you know with light guns? I've met just a few. And with few I mean just two or three in over 20 years.

Time Crisis was awesome. You got to arcades now and they are still filled with gun games. It is hard to understand why they are not made more for home. They already have Move which can be used as a gun like it was in Killzone.

Yes, but is it in enough homes to justify the expenditure of making a full on game designed for it? I don't think so.

there were a few light gun games for the Wii because it was packed in with a Lightgun, but otherwise, I don't think game companies want to make games that are only sellable to either the Wii U (which doesn't have good 3rd party sales) or the PS Move (which isn't a large install base).

To be honest, I haven't purchased a light gun in my life. Yes, it's cool to play - I like playing these types of games in arcades. But when it comes to home gaming, it becomes a whole different story. If only the light gun could be used for other games as well. But no, it's too niche specific. That's why not a lot of developers focus on making a light gun or light gun based games.

I hate having to buy extra items that will only be used for a few games so I've never cared for these types of games. I can't say I ever even enjoyed playing Duck Hunt and therefore only ever played it a couple of times. Overall I think it's better that there are less of these games simply because they are way less popular and would be a lot more trouble than their worth. Other games I don't care for in this sense is Rock Band/Guitar Hero, I really don't see the point of having to buy extra equipment to play a game.

Develoeprs arent going to make games that require additional purchases, no point making a game that only 0.5% of the gaming community can play.

Lol. That's true. Venturing into light gun games is not very profitable. If I were a game developer, I wouldn't waste my time on it too. I'd rather make a generic first person shooter rather than a brilliant light gun game. Maybe it would even make me money.

Honestly everyone has said it already, but the short of it is:
1.) It requires accessories that most people aren't going to purchase.
2.) Most developers aren't willing to produce a potential flop.
3.) That's why there are arcades for these kinds of games.

Zappers are a very old technology and above all the primary reason we don't use them anymore is that they don't work with flat screen TV's. If not that, they would undoubtedly still be around in one form or another, but CRT TV's and monitors are so rare now that it's just pointless. But if someone was to develop a similar piece of tech that does work with flat screen TV's then I think that they could safely make a come back, if they entertained people back in the days, then they should still be quite interesting now.

Medza... sometimes I worry about you. That said he/she/it is completely correct - https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Light_gun Who would have thought it?

Haha, I'm studying IT and I chose to do one of my modules on video games so I produced a 10,000+ word essay on the technology used in video games and I've spent quite a lot of time researching the NES peripherals so I do know my zappers inside and out ;) That said , I found something quite interesting the other day : DELTA SIX: A new kind of game controller. by David Kotkin ? Kickstarter , a modern equivalent that apparently works with flat screen TV's.

No body would want to buy extra gear to play a game that they might not ever return to. This is why we have arcades in the malls so we can go there and actually play them.
