I might be alone in thinking this, but Kingdom Hearts. I'm well into my RPGs but playing this game just left me a bit bored and I couldn't really get away with all the cutesy Disney influences. I gave up on playing it reasonably fast though, so perhaps it may have grown on me, but I didn't really feel like giving it a chance to.
FFX and Kingdom Hearts. Thing with FFX is that I liked everyone except for FFX's Aeris/Rinoa/Dagger and Tidus. Loved Wakka, Lulu, and Auron. Didn't care for the story though. With KH it was difficult. I like classic Disney (not as much as I LOVE Warner Bros. and like Hanna-Barbara) and have a soft spot in my heart for Square Enix for Dragon Quest, their SNES RPGs, and having Final Fantasy Tactics on Nintendo handhelds.
...KH didn't gel for me. It was like if the Reese's cup didn't pan out and tasted like mint chocolate instead (I hate mint chocolate).
Kingdom Hearts as the most overrated, True Crimes: Streets of LA as an overrated game. Not the most, but one magazine did put that game on the cover like it was going to blow the doors off of the GTA clone genre and it turned out only being good at best.
I felt True Crime as a whole was underrated. As SpaceTiger said, it got buried by there being better games in that same subgenre of titles: GTA, Scarface, Driv3r, Mercenaries, and so on.
I agree on Kingdom Hearts being overrated too. Sure, it's got a lot of cameos from other franchises which is very neat but other than this the game doesn't offer much in terms of gameplay. The story was also quite boring and typical. There weren't many overrated games but a lot of underrated gems on the PS2 in my opinion.
I would probably have to go with Kingdom Hearts as well. Maybe it's just one of those games that I don't get. It really just seems like a money grab to me. They just take characters that people love and throw them in a pile and try to have it make sense. I don't know, just never really understood that one.
I think Metal Gear Solid: Sons of Liberty was a bit overrated. Yep, it was a good silly game with cool stealth mechanics but I think that some critics gave the game outrageously high ratings. I think it just deserved a 7 at most.
As much as I enjoyed the game I'm going to have to give this demerit to Final Fantasy X. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the game and still do, but I think people glossed over a lot of the same flaws they tore about Final Fantasy 13 for having. Let me get this straight, FF13, in my opinion, is an abomination (my opinion, not fact!) but I think X continued many of the trends that would carry over into later FF games until it culminated with FF13.
I feel dirty typing that because I like FFX a lot and I loathe FF13 more than you can imagine, I'm just trying to be objective. It was a drag playing the game and realizing there was no world map either after having been spoiled by Final Fantasy games with huge, expansive worlds with secrets strewn about at the corner's of the world. Oh well.
I've always had disdain for FFX and one of the major reasons was that the degree of exploration that was in the SNES and PSX era Final Fantasy games was absent from FFX. It was all corridor/space-corridor/space with pockets off to the side for you to get a chest. There was no actual overworld. You went to set locations (didn't have to find them) and you went from one end of the level to the other in a series of large rooms with set paths and backgrounds.
The game looked great for its time and the story was okay, but that feeling of being on an adventure and actually traveling around--getting your first land vehicle, then realizing it would only take you so far so you had to get the mandatory FF airship--none of that was there. You had an airship, but you might as well not have.
I will agree on Kingdom Hearts being overrated. It's kind of ironic that I love Disney movies and the Final Fantasy series, but I never got used to this game. I just don't know why, but I guess it has more to do with the game's lack of appeal. And I would likewise agree as to FFX being extremely overrated too. As SpaceTiger had succinctly mentioned, there was the lack of exploration of the world map, and instead you will be guided to already preset destinations.
My pick would be Lego Batman. I admit that I could see the charm in it, but I personally still found it to be very boring regardless. It surely wasn't the worst game ever, but I'm a fan of Batman and even I couldn't bring myself to go further with the game because it was a bit flat for me. I'm sure a lot of other people would disagree which is why it's such a famous franchise now, but back then with just my own perspective, I would never have predicted it and I would have loved to see a lot of other games make it this far instead of this particular title.
Final Fantasy games and Kingdom Hearts are also my bet for overrated games. I mean, I am not a hardcore RPG fan, but I do like playing them, especially when the game has an engaging story arc, but I find Kingdom Hearts a bit, well, lacking, its terms of certain elements, I often get bored playing it resulting to a switch from Disney to some bloody God of War massacre. Final Fantasy, especially the latter ones are a bit too uninteresting and linear.
Wow really? I thought Kingdom Hearts was a great game, not only was the graphics good, gameplay was good for a RPG, but it had a good long story. And the first True Crime was a excellent game, all be it a total ripoff of GTA but in its own right a good game for the time, sort of like what Saints Row had become for PS3.
Games that I thought were overrated was God of War games, I was just never impressed by any of the games in the series. I just didn't see why it got such high praise.
