playing games on tablets

I read the other day that some in the industry are claiming that the trend is toward playing games on tablets. Do you think this is true? I think it's just that tablets are newer and, since they're portable, you have more choices on where you play. But I don't see tablets as displacing anything, do you?

I think if you have a tablet you're obviously going to play games on them. But I don't think enough people own tablets to make it a "trend," right?

I don't think the tablet is going to become something that people use just to play games on. I think it's more like, "Hey I'm bored right now and this tablet is in my bag. I'll play a game while I'm waiting." I don't think it's going to be for serious gaming.

I don't see tablets replacing anything either but I do see how they could be more convenient at times. Your kids could play a game on a tablet in the car. With the newer tablets you can get Wi-Fi or internet access almost anywhere can't you?

I agree with Jenny. I think gaming on a tablet is more of a sideline kind of thing, rather than something you'd buy specifically to play games on.

If tablets affect anything, I think they just increase the number of people who play games. But I don't think anyone is looking at the tablet as a preferred alternative to a console. It's more likely that some of the people who start playing games because they have a tablet will end up getting a console.

Tablets replacing consoles? No, I don't see that happening anytime soon. To be honest, playing games on a tablet feels more uncomfortable than I had imagined. Sure, using a tablet to play games to make the time pass faster is one thing, but having to choose between the gaming experience offered by tablets and the one offered by consoles, it's consoles hands down!

I think it's just marketing hype in any effort to increase sales of the tablets. A tablet is not going to be any kind of replacement for a console just like people aren't going to stop buying laptops because they have an iPhone.

Tablet games can't really be compared to console games. The latter are a lot more complex and the gaming experience differs a lot, so I doubt that tablets will be the downfall of consoles, just like the computer games did not make consoles obsolete and vice versa. There are different devices for different type of gamers.

I think it's because games companies can reach a new market audience with people who have tablets. People who buy tablets
don't original buy them just for gaming. They buy them for business/work etc. Plus many of them aren't originally gamers either.

Plus with tablets it can offer a platform to smaller companies who don't have big budgets to make games for consoles or PC.
With all these factors tablet gaming has become rather popular. For me a tablet could never replace a console but when
I'm travelling it is fun to play some simple games on it.

I think that is like saying that flash games will eventually rule the gaming market. Is just absurd to think something like that!
Doesn't matter how good the technology gets, gaming will always be different in tablets.

Games on Tablets are really just Flash and HTML5 games, I personally can not get on with any advanced games on a tablet or my iPhone. I brought GTA's game on Android and I couldn't get to grips with the touchscreen controls, especially trying to Shoot and Aim and Move at the same time with the virtual touch joypad... I need a proper mouse and keyboard or console controller for that and I think that is why tablets will only be for basic games and never for anything advanced or ones with lots of controls!

Tablets are good for playing games on but you have to remember just who owns a tablet and what games they are playing,Its the casual gamer that is playing free/microtransaction games or people playing facebook games.
This platform is not a serious contender to the console market but it does hurt the handheld market quite a lot.

I am not going to disagree with anything anyone said, but I want to point out a few things. They are big upgrades on the horizon for mobile phones and tablets. They're going to be both in hardware and game quality. So, there is a possibility mobile phones and tablets may take over game consoles. ;)

I think phablets and tablets could replace handheld console gaming in the near future. I have a Samsung Galaxy Note 2 and I have found some games available on the Google Play Store that could rival some of the best games on the handheld consoles. Squaresoft has remade Final Fantasy 3 and 4 on Android and made it completely 3D. There's Shadowgun which is similar to Gears of War. You have Real Boxing which could give Fight Night a run for its money. I tell you, Android and iOS gaming are close to handheld console gaming.

"Gaming" on tablets is a ploy, but a smart one from a business perspective. I've played games on iOS, and I'm absolutely not a fan. If I wanted to play games on a handheld device, I would buy a PS Vita or a 3DS. There's nothing wrong with games on tablets and phones, but they aren't really video games.

I've never felt comfortable playing anything on a tablet, to be honest. It just feels clunky, not precise and you don't get that visceral feedback like you get from actual buttons or a d-pad. Just not my style.

My handheld gaming is now primarily done on my Samsung Galaxy Note 2. All around, I see a lot of kids and adults alike playing on phablets and tablets. A few years back, I was still seeing a lot of people playing PSPs and Nintendo DSs. But times have changed. So in my opinion, handheld gaming consoles have some tough competition.

I don't game on a tablet, but when it comes to mobile gaming I do use my smart phone. While handheld systems are still doing pretty well for themselves, they do have major competition in the form of tablets and smartphones. Since pretty much everyone has one, a lot of people choose not buy a handheld systems. Along with that, so many people are casual gamers so they only want something to pass the time for a few minutes, not something that is a dedicated gaming console.
