PlayStation 4 incompatible with PS3 Mad Catz Tournament Edition FightSticks

Well, that sucks.

Mad Catz's extensive line of PlayStation 3 Tournament Edition FightSticks will not function with Sony's new PlayStation 4, Joystiq confirmed today with Mad Catz senior product development manager Richard Neville. "Playstation 4 will require a whole new set of peripherals," Neville said.

Currently, Mad Catz has announced that it is launching a new and improved Tournament Edition 2 FightStick for the Xbox One when that console is released sometime this year, but the peripheral manufacturer was unable to comment on the availability of future PlayStation 4 sticks.

I have like 5 PS3/360 compatible Joysticks. I was really hoping that since it was USB that they would not pull this garbage. Really poor move by Sony if they are the cause.

I agree, I probably expected much the same thing too since like you, I just automatically concluded that since they all pretty much plug into USB sockets then they would all eventually be universal. They might have their own reasons for deciding on this, hopefully not financial ones, but I doubt that's the case. I'd probably attribute it to the fact that they seem to be trying to go for a reformat with this new console seeing as they're introducing touch pads and share buttons, so hopefully after this introduction we'd get to see more standardization and therefore have better compatibility for future consoles.

Well, maybe since the PS4 is not backwards compatible with the PS3 games, it won't also be backwards compatible with its accessories. Lol. Personally, I don't purchase 3rd party accessories like controllers. I just purchase those that are made by Sony. I never felt the need for 3rd party peripherals.

I can understand why this would be frustrating because of the cost of the controller. I will sometimes go out and purchase 3rd party hardware but I never expect to use it on a system that I did not buy it for. I bought a ton of PS 2 controllers since mine would frequently go out and never thought about attaching them to the PS 3. The same thing with my 360. I have a lot of 3rd party stuff that I bought for it that won't go on an Xbox One because that wasn't its purpose.

The difference is that I didn't spend $150 on those things. In the spirit of that, I would want my $150 controller to work on the new system, but when it doesn't I would be upset too.

This is pretty frustrating for people who use joysticks, but I can understand from the sellers perspective. They sold it as a ps3 controller and it works for ps3, that's what it was made for! not to be compatible with anything else, just the ps3. If you want a playstation 4 joystick, you have to invest more, so they can have a bigger profit. Same goes for the ps3 controller, it won't work for the ps4, forcing you tu buy new stuff so they can profit :)

I was thinking about this a little bit later, although ti is frustrating, I bet there's some silver lining for the companies in this. They get to basically take a working joystick and do a couple of mods on it and sell it again. I mean, that's very conspiracy theory of me, but I fell like I'm onto something.

It's not just a pain for people who bought sticks on the older consoles but those of us who mess who customs as well. I have 2 old MAS sticks that I hacked so that it could work on 360/PS3. I will need new PCBs so that they will work again or wait until someone makes a custom chip to work with both.
