PlayStation 4 will not have a Power Brick

Shuhei Yoshida, Sony President of Worldwide Studios, has confirmed via Twitter that the PlayStation 4 will not use a power brick. Instead, the power supply will be housed internally, not unlike the Xbox One.

Additional details regarding the PlayStation 4's power supply and how the company managed to fit it within the console's relatively small casing are still unknown, but at least we have a better idea of what Sony has in store for us later this year.

After one bad experience with accidentally yanking the cords off of a power supply during a move, I must say I'm relieved to hear there won't be any obnoxious black boxes in the middle of my cord. It'll save a lot of space, too. If anything, I can just wrap the single wire around the case and be on my merry way.

This is a relief. On one of my 360's the cord get's loose all the time and that thing is a monster. Somehow they got this thing smaller than an XB1 without the power brick. Sony engineering FTW!

Yes. I cannot stand the brick that's with the Xbox. It's just awkward.

I don't really mind the brick, but then I have so many wires and stuff around that I don't really notice it. Actually it's sitting just a few feet from me right now and I'm astounded at how large it is in comparison to the console itself. I'd much rather have a power brick than one of those huge plugs that weights like three pounds and takes up four outlets on a power strip. Yikes.

I'm glad we're finally moving past these things. Hopefully one day all other gadgets and appliances can follow suit. It never really bothered me all that much, to be honest, but any step towards further convenience is, of course, welcome. Nonetheless, this might sound like a minute advancement, but after we get used to this standard in the near future I'm sure we'd all wonder how we all used to manage with all our bulky power boxes and wires.

Right. I do appreciate the fact that it's much easier to move my PS3 around than my 360 since carrying the brick is like carrying two consoles. I ended up getting a second HDMI cable for the sole purpose of keeping things in their place. I prefer to keep the 360 where it is for obvious reasons, but the PS3 is a lot more mobile--which is a plus.

Good news as always, but i do wonder, won't this heat the console even more? The console is already so small, and now the battery will be inside the console too, this can't be good to play during the summer without starting a fire.

Yeah I wondered about that too. But hopefully it won't. Time will tell I suppose.

Do people actually have the problem of having their consoles overheat? I remember hearing about someone who left their console on a windowsill or something in the summer, which was really stupid to begin with, but not really typical either. I suppose I take A/C for granted when I'm playing games...

When I had the old fat PS3 (I think it was a 80GB), that overheated pretty bad. I had it in a appropriate spot with decent ventilation, but it would still overheat after 30 mins of using it. Thankfully, my slim doesn't

That's good news to hear. I myself have never had any issues but I have had countless friends tell me about how their consoles would overheat and whatnot. I guess it all depends really on how you take care of your stuff. Also, I've said it before but I'll say it again, I'm really glad that Sony has been making all the right moves so far in preparation for the release of the PS4. Hope they keep it up.

Yeah, ventilation is pretty important. I guess I don't think about it as much because none of my consoles have ever overheated, at least not to my knowledge. I used to have a laptop that was absolutely terrible at ventilating air, so I would put it on a platform to make extra sure. I also used to use it to play Xbox Live on my Elite 360 (which didn't have built-in Wifi), so I used to point a fan at it to make extra sure. I'm glad the technology is improving (in both laptops and game consoles) so it's less of an issue, but it's still a good thing to keep in mind.

Thats good, the PS3 didn't have a power brick, but I thought it would be in the PS4 because the size of it seemed small. We'll see when they release it if they change the model of outside.Or if oveheating happens. On my Xbox that things like fat, and it gets loose way too often, its a big piss off. I never had an issue involving over heating, none of my console or laptops overheated after like 10+ hours of use, guess technology's just getting better.

Anyway, it's not much of an inconvenience for me, because I'm used to dragging my laptops around, and we all know laptops have power bricks. And like most of you guys said, ventilation is really important... if you don't have the console ventilated well, it's gonna get pwned fast. My computer video card just had this, not enough ventilation and it overheated... at least I still have my ps3

From memory the Phat PS3 didn't have a power brick. Don't quote me on that though as I could be wrong.

I just wanted to go on record of saying that I hate power bricks. They are hard to hide, they are hard to manage and some of my TV stands I've had and do have don't conceal or work around them very well. I know that I don't want my house to explode or catch on fire or anything but not having a power brick is a great thing. The PC and monitors of the world figured it out a long time ago. I could sit here and go into arguments about the type of electricity that consoles need, but I think we should all just agree, power bricks suck.
