PS1 vs N64

Well, somebody had to start it. :D

The PS1 and the N64 were toe to toe competitors during the mid 1990's to the early 2000s. Each console had its own exclusives, each had its own advantages and disadvantages, strengths and weaknesses. The PS1 was a CD based system wherein the N64 used cartridges. The PS1 allowed you to play CDs while the N64 did not. The PS1 was only a 32 bit system but the N64 was a 64 bit system. All in all, which do you think was the better console?

It's a tie with me. The N64 had great games like Majora's mask/Ocarina of Time, Banjo Kazooie/Tooie, and Super Mario 64. The PSX had ones like Final Fantasy 7, the Twisted Metal games, and Mega Man X4. You are almost asking me to choose my favorite child (not that I have kids).

I had great experiences with bot consoles, but I would side with N64 if you made me choose. Ocarina of Time is my favorite game of all time. One thing I will say about PS1 is that it offered some epic games like FF7 that N64 couldn't because of the storage capacity of a cartridge.

Hmm, I'll go for the PlayStation 1. Not only did it have more games overall, it had better games than the N64. I think most of the games for the N64 were catered towards kids while the PS1 had more variety. It had everything that I could as for at the time. Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy, Syphon Filter, Tenchu, Gran Turismo, Crash Bandicoot, Tekken 3, NBA Live, Xenogears, Street Fighter, Soul Blade... It had it all. It was awesome.

I didn't have an N64, but I did play games on it fairly often. I go with the Playstation. There was more variety on it. The N64 had the Zelda games, 007, the Mario games, Perfect Dark, and some others. The Playstation had the Crash games, the Spyro games, the Final Fantasy games, the Syphon Filter games, MGS, GTA, and a bunch more.

I respect your opinion, but have to disagree on the overall quality of games on the N64. It had Mario 64, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Paper Mario, Smash Bros, the Mario Party games, Banjo Kazooie, Conker's Bad Fur Day, Diddy Kong Racing, Goldeneye, etc.

Yea when you put it like that PS1 sounds like the clear winner, but then i can pull out a couple of names that were heavywieghts as well.

Such as
Goldeneye
Pilotwings 64
Mario 64
Majoras Mask
Ocarina of Time
The best implementation of WCW vs NWO
Super MarioKart 64

There is a certain unbridled greatness about the N64. So many cl***ic games that will go down in the annals of history as great innovations in gaming. PS1 has its own titles that hold weight in the realm of greatness, but hardly any can compete for "greatest of all time" like many N64 titles can.

I love both but since my PS1 was sold a long time ago and I still have my N64, I'll go with N64. Even though it had very few games, the games that came out exclusively for it were smash hits. No pun intended. I still play it from time to time and my cousins love Super Smash Bros. so they play every time they're over. I even play Legend of Zelda when I want to. I do feel bad if some you guys don't have you N64s anymore buy that's why we have Amazon or EBay.

From what I've seen, I'd say that PS1 was probably the better console, but the N64 no doubt has the biggest legacy. Most playstation gamers have probably heard of series like Twisted Metal or Metal Gear, but pretty much every gamer ever has heard of Ocarina of Time and Mario Kart.

I had a PS1 before an N64 (and even that was just borrowed), so I may be a bit biased. I have a lot of fond memories of the PS1, but I think I liked the N64 because it seemed more suited to my age group. It really depends on the games you like and the games you play more than the console itself, I think.

Honestly, in my opinion nothing beats the N64's library of games. Even today it's still the best there ever was and possibly will be for this next gen.

My memory may be faulty but I remember finding the PS1 much better than the N64. N64 definitely had a m***ive library with some cl***ics in there but perhaps because of the way I was introduced to the PS1, I liked the games on it a lot more.

PS1, my Dad wasn't a fan of N64 and he got the PS1 for me in early-mid 1999 and I still have it! I loved playing Spyro the Dragon (the very first one that came out September, 1998). That was my very first game ever.

I think that PSX had more classics due to a larger library--the N64 period was when Nintendo really started riding off 1st party--most of those coming from a boat load of RPGs that were released as SNES was the last time RPGs would be a huge part of the populace on Nintendo home consoles.

While PSX took the win in sales, the N64 was the console that innovated two other ground breaking things in gaming: the analog stick (nothing else at that time served the purpose of the analog stick) and actual 3D movement. Like prior to that, you had 3D worlds, but when it came to movement that was something best left to first person games. If SNES's face button layout was like fire being discovered, the analog stick and 3D movement in third person was like the wheel being invented.

Could only find the Keynote speech for PSX which was kind of...long and boring...so here's ATARI JAGUAR from E3 '95!

The best implementation of WCW vs NWO

I always felt that of that generation, the N64 had the better wrestling titles. Whenever someone talks about best wrestling games it's either WCW vs. nWo Revenge, World Tour, No Mercy (all N64), Fire Pro D (DC), Giant Gram 2000 (DC), or WWE SD: Here Comes The Pain (PS2, the last actual enjoyable SD game). PSX's SmackDown games were good, but even at the time they looked so...jaggy at the time which was understandable whereas N64's were blocky.

...then you get Acclaim's crappy WWF/ECW games and the sadness that was EA WCW games--when you knew WCW was good and dead.
