PS3 Stopped powering On

Guardian

New Member
Yesterday I go to turn my PS3 off and the fan starts revving up and it doesn't fully power off until I have to flip the switch on the back. When I tried turning it back on, the lights on the controller just blinked simultaneously and nothing happened. I tried turning it on by the button on the front of the console, the lights came on as if it was coming on, but nothing happened.

Does anyone have any idea what happened and how I can fix this?

Any help is appreciated. Thanks.

Pull the power lead of the wall socket and try again.
If its happening all the time perhaps your PS3 has finally packed it in.
Unless anyone else can offer a suggestion?

Turn it off, flip the switch in the back left to OFF, unplug the power cord from the back, then from the socket. Wait about 30 seconds, plug the powercord back into the socket, then into the console, then press and hold the power button til it beeps a couple times then turns off again, then press the power button and hold it again but wait until you hear 2 quick beeps. Plus your controller into the usb port and you'll be at the recovery menu. You can either Restore PS3 system all the way, it deletes everything and makes it like new. (basically photos, pics, video, audio, downloaded games + saves) will all be gone. If you don't wanna try that, try REBUILD DATABASE. I found that my ps3 had way to much clutter in the database. Probably cause I have over 700gb hdd on it and my ps3 has lasted like...5+ years. Mine was doing the same.

Other than that, I have no clue, it could be the power supply or motherboard. If you're not getting the yellow light, it could just be that the system is basically overloaded with files and stuff.

You might have fried it by flipping the switch. The best way to handle a locked-up system is to hold the power button down. Just shutting off the power to any kind of electronic device is no good.

I had no idea about that, I've done that 100 times, especially on BF4 when it freezes on me all the freaking time. -_- Stupid freeze glitches.

Ya bro, never a good idea, you probably overworked your ps3. Thankfully you can probably find cheap ones elsewhere and even though you can get your trophies back and deactivate your current ps3 via the sony website, you'll have to redo all your saves.

Thanks for the help and suggestions guys! Nothing I did worked to get it working, so I thought I was just going to sell it to Gamestop. I'm not sure what he did, but the guy there got it working in seconds. He must have seen whatever it is before, but he never told me what he did.

So wait, you sold it or the guy just fixed it? Did he clean it out or something? I find that cumulative dust can really mess up your PS3 system. Dust basically acts as a blanket to the insides of your system and if it persists for months and months and many hours of use, the ps3 will overheat and most likely fry your system. Other than that, wth did the guy do? lol

I had a slim model that got a lot of dust in it just due to the angle that my slim PS3 was and it packed in due to overheating and dust related issues. I was under warranty and managed to get an exchange from Sony.

I am glad you got it worked out man, from one gamer to another, any gamer going through the pain of a dying system is almost as bad or just as bad as your beloved pet bird dying whom you love so much.
Seriously though, sony products last awhile and though there are always a few faults here and there, least it's manageable by a company who works with you. No warranty though... ouch.

As I was selling it, the guy fixed it. So, a combination of both. I have kept it pretty clean over its lifetime, and taken really good care of it so I doubt it was anything like that. To be honest, I have no idea what he did. :P Whatever it was, it took a whole two minutes and it wasn't obvious. I was talking to my wife when he was messing with it so I didn't see what he did.

The PS3 has a Self cleaning/fan test feature (NOT ADVISED). If you hold down the 2 buttons on the front and flip the switch on the back at the same time for the PS3 fat or unplug the PS3 slim, hold down the 2 buttons and re insert the power cord. You might have interrupted a cycle and just needed to restart it?

Dmadman72 that isn't really a 'self cleaning' process. I believe that is used by Developers to test the fan strength in cases where the PS3 is continually over heating. I believe it is refereed to as a 'self cleaning' process because of the internet.

I personally wouldn't recommend using it.

I would suggest some of the things the others have already mentioned: shutting the entire system off, including the switch in the back and unplugging it. Then trying to turn it all back on, one switch and button at a time. If it doesn't come back on, then it's probably done for. You might be able to get it repaired though, especially since you will most likely want to keep the game data that is in the memory banks of the unit. I think you can call Gamestop to see who they use locally.

Well you could try pressing the console for 3-5 sec (to reset HDD). if it still wont work try to
carefully take out the hard drive disk from your PS3 which should be full of dust. Reset it and then place it back in. If you are not sure how to do the above steps properly like resetting the HDD and dusting the inside properly but if your not the DIY type of person just get it fix.

Sometimes it just needs to have the power cut and let sit for a minute. At least mine does and once I do that then its good to go.

You just need to plug it out for a bit and give a few seconds and then you can plug it back in. Also ensure that the jacks or the hdmi cable is installed properly because sometimes it could be a bit loose and that can be causing it to not power on properly. This is what I did and it worked for me.

Most of the time any of the problems that I have had with the console or controller were resolved with a simple fix. Unplugging it is the simplest thing that I know how to do so I roll with that first and then try something else.
