PS3's Future After PS4's Release

I've been meaning to buy another console as a backup, and even though a super slim is relatively cheap now, I still would like it to buy it at a lower price considering it's just for backup. Do you guys think PS3 will further go down in price significantly in the near future, or will it probably stay pretty much at this price range starting now since it looks like it's pretty much at the bottom already? When do they usually stop production? I'd hate to miss out and end up having to buy a second hand console, but at the same time I'd only ever buy another one if the brand new price was at its absolute bottom. What do you guys think?

I don't think that the production of the PS 2 stopped production until a year after the release of the 3. Based on that information I'd say that you have time to decide what the best deal is to get another PS 3 if you wanted it. Also, its not a bad idea to check out who might be selling theirs on Ebay. I would look for someone with a very high rating for this though. I know that I bought a PS 2 off Ebay that melted a game. It was the lamest moment of my gaming life, but I recovered with a weekend of Kingdom Hearts when I got a replacement to that one.

I'm actually planning on doing the same, I think.

The PS3 will be around till at least 2015 in my opinion. The PS2 didn't end production until the end of 2012 and I highly doubt Sony will pull the PS3 anytime soon. I expect a price drop for the PS3 to be announced shortly after the PS4 is released. It might go down to around $149 and will go on to still be a high seller, especially to those that won't be making the transition to next gen.

The PS3 still has a long time to go as it prepares to take its spot as a classic alongside the PS1 and PS2. Keep in mind that not everyone will be able to afford the PS4 on release, and when it comes to gifts and such many people who don't really know or can afford better will settle with the PS4's predecessors. As long as the system and its different versions still sell, it'll be on the market. As far as I can see, it won't be leaving anytime soon and the odd game will be made now and then just like it was for the PS2 and original Xbox.

I doubt that it will go down in price any more than it is now, but there may be some new bundles later on. I got the Uncharted 3 GOTY PS3 bundle from Best Buy for $269 (plus tax), and I earned enough points on their site to redeem for a $5 gift certificate. Not a huge deal, of course, but it's something I try to do whenever I make a major purchase. I can't remember the last time the price went down, but I would be surprised if they dropped it again, even after the PS4's release.

very true, I heard PS2 is releasing one last game this year. sort of crazy when you think about it, but awesome also!
PS3 has so much more to give, and it will keep giving for years to come!

The important thing is to never forget the memories spent with a console!
PS3 therefore always live for me.
Technically, the next two years, we will not see more games on PS3. This is true because we will definitely facing the PS4. Or maybe could give three years.
Then the PS4 will have time to drop in price to be accessible to everyone. The PS3 has had a big price drop like the PS2 at the time.

Anyway, I'll keep my console back into my old games when I feel like it.

It's weird to think of the PS3 as an old console. That's especially true for me since I've only had mine for a few months, so it's still very new to me. I'm astounded when I think about how long it's been out because it seems like just a few years ago that it was released. I do really like it when a console sticks around for a long time.

The PS3 will still be around for one main reason : backwards compatibility or rather the lack of it. When the Xbox 360 came out it could play the original Xbox games, and when the PS3 came out it could play PS2 games. But with the 8th generation there is no backwards compatibility, and so we will be stuck in this transition period between the two consoles, and this period will last much longer than it did going from the 6th to the 7th gen.

I think there will still be plenty on people out there who will still have their PS3 after the PS4 release. There is absolutely nothing wrong with that though, I just know there will be tons of people who will be doing so, even after the release.

I think the ps3 will keep going on and on for at least 5 or 10 years. WHY? well maybe just because not everyone can afford a ps4 and many ps3 games will be very cheap as well as the ps3's. yay goodie cheaper games!
