As I mentioned in this post it looks like the PS4 will get MP3 and video player support in an upcoming software update.

According to reddit user IWorkForSony, who has been verified by r/PS4 subreddit moderators as a Sony employee, Sony is currently developing an update for the PS4 that will bring MP3 and video player support by the holiday season. The user also said that DLNA media server support will come some time in 2015.

About time! Granted my computer is in the same room with my PS4 so I just play music from it, but still, finally.

Do we know if this is a legit source or just speculation? Either way finally, that is one of the most basic and sought after support that people wanted. I can't believe the system shipped without this simple function of playing bloody music. I already said it in another thread but at least they are finally putting in these functions that people really want.

I'm surprised it doesn't do this out of the box. My main concern would be DRM as it always seems to be an issue when it comes to this type of content. It never ceases to amaze me how basic stuff seems to end up not working or being discussed close to or after launch like backwards compatibility and music, videos, or dvds, stuff that's been done since PS/2 days.

Excellent news. I don't have cable and have been using my game station for movies and tv for many years.

It's good news as people have been shouting for it. Personally, I only use my PS4 for playing games while I do everything else on the computer. There is only one thing I want and Sony still hasn't put it out yet.

Do you know what would be great? Support for Bluetooth wireless (d'oh) music playback. Sounds like something that could be implemented if some thought went into it.
