I know I keep moaning on about this (risking sounding like a broken old record!), but the only way I feel Sony will now increase or prolong decent sales of the PS4 is to start considering price reductions. I'm not talking about £5 here or £10 there… That's short change. I'm talking about £40/50 off the basic console. 'Pigs may fly' I know, but hear me out…!
Look at it this way. I suspect the vast majority of those who really wanted one and couldn't wait already have theirs. They won't be buying one again any time soon so barring occasional sales on games and subscriptions, that'll be it from them for several years I'd imagine. Those who still haven't got a PS4 console (i.e me) are likely to be waiting for improved prices and/or better value bundles to sway them. If such people weren't willing to shell out full launch/list price at launch, they certainly won't be doing so now that the console has been on the market for what, 10(ish) months… The privilege of paying full whack and being 'one of the first' has long gone.
One or two semi-attractive bundles are just starting to make an appearance here in the UK, if you know where to look. However the minimal difference in price compared to launch at the moment still isn't worth it. I'm sure it will happen some day, it's inevitable, but I do feel Sony are playing the 'waiting game' with potential customers at the moment. Mark my words, if there was to be a price reduction, I suspect we would be seeing a shortage of them on the shelves again within days…
The special edition (colour) consoles could still be sold at full price for their 'exclusivity' but regular black ones in turn could be given some sort of discount to compensate.
Another idea is one that I've already suggested. A PS4 'lite'. Basically a slimmed down and cheaper model that gives you all the PS4 gaming without the added garnish of online capability e.t.c… Ideal for those who have rubbish or limited internet and those who don't have 68 friends online at any given time – or any friends to start off with…!
I'm sorry to sound as if I'm having 'a go' again. Honestly, I'm not. I would love to have a PS4 console. As an owner of the previous three, it's a natural 'no-brainer' progression for me. I'm not swayed by the competition, either. But come on Sony…! They've come up with changing just about everything – but the price, the main factor in actually getting those sales, remains the same…!
