The reason is simple - the DS has tons of significantly better games. I own both consoles as well as pretty much every game I'm interested in playing. This collection is, for the PSP, pretty sad. I think the PSP is better for action games (though it has some amazing ones in other genres, like Patapon) while the DS is the king of RPGs. The PSP is a nice system but lacks many good games which reduces it's value significantly, in my opinion.
I've been curious about getting a DS for myself so thanks for sharing that info GamerGirl. I just looked up games for both devices and I think you are right. There are way less games available for the PSP that I'm interested in than what the DS offers.
You cant really compare them as you have to remember that Nintendo tapped into a relatively untouched niche of mothers, girls, and older adults and created a completely new genre of customer in the casual gamer market.
The DS touchscreen appealed to females and the brain training had everyone over 50 playing one.
PSP had sports games and Japanese RPG's.
It was no contest really.
I have always been a PSP supporter, and I am still playing it and buying games. I just don't like the DS because of its games really. I feel like PSP games are much cooler, and I ever see people playing Pokemon games on the DS, which has NEVER been something I have wanted to do. I like PSP's strategy and platforming games. Everything on one screen without having to focus on two at the same time was pretty much the deal breaker on my opinion too.
I had a DSi XL for about a month... It was sold on Ebay. So, yeah, I would prefer the PSP over the DS. Also, the PSP has better games than the DS. I mean, really. 17 new Mario games every year. It was way too kid friendly.
In the past I would say PSP is better, hands down. But now, with less titles being made for the PSP, I would say that going for a DS is more worthwhile. Even though I feel that the DS is nothing special, the truth is that it has a wider range of games coming out as compared to PSP. Add on to the fact that DS has some of the bigger game titles like Pokemon, Mario and Monster Hunter and I think we have a clear winner.
The PSP is way better......i think the challenge is that the PSP came out at a time when you would rather have bought the PS2 as opposed to the PSP. Also more games were available for the PS2 console and more kept coming out. I also think that in this day and age with tabs and ipads technology is moving more towards hand held devices and so that is probably why the DS has more attention at the moment
The PSP tried to be a mini PlayStation 2 whereas the DS tried to be something unique. The PSP just had lots of PlayStation ports while the DS had a lot of original games. The PSP is living behind the shadow of its big console brother while the DS has its own image and personality.
Both great consoles with great titles, but if i really had to choose, i would had to go with the PSP, mostly because of how a great of a platform it was not only for games, but for other stuff like browsing the web and reading.
Honestly, I think it is a matter of personal preference. Each have their merits and their drawbacks. As Gamergirl said earlier, there is a large difference in what games are actually available on the two consoles. The PSP has more action games and the more "mature" games, so to speak. I think the DS is more aimed at a younger audience. Don't get me wrong, the DS still has some games for older kids on it, but it's more of a children's machine.
I would say the Nintendo DS. My childhood is all over that handheld console. I've played many of my first games on it, and still replay it occasionally just for nostalgia's sake. Even though it may be a kiddie console, I still love it a lot.
