SATA III or SATA II?

Does anyone have definitive proof of whether or not the PS4 has SATA III capabilities?

PlayStation support will not have good info, they know nothing except what is on the FAQ website.

It will probably SATA III since it's been a few years since it became the standard.
It would weird to not have SATA III since they allow to change the HDD of the console and I know for sure that many people will be upgrading to an SSD, and with just SATA II the SSD upgrade would be pointless.

From playstation blog:

PS4 is equipped with a 5400 RPM SATA II hard drive. Users can choose to install a new hard drive so long as it complies with these standards, is no thicker than 9.5mm, and is larger than 160GB.

However Sata 3 is backwards compatible with Sata and Sata 2 anyway, it just performs slower.

I know that already. Doesn't matter what it is equipped with, it could still be SATA III capable.


I would not suggest an SSD, even if it is SATA III capable, because of the constant writing and deleting of entire 30-50gb games.

Given that SATA III has been out for quite a while now, and it has support for USB3, I see no reason why it wouldn't. Even my 4 something year old motherboard has SATA III support, despite none of my drives supporting it.

Not really, SATAII and SATAIII both have theoretical max transfer rates. Lets call that the speed limit of a highway.
HDD's and SSD also both have max transfer rates, we'll call THAT vehicle top speed.

A SATA II SSD will have a higher transfer rate than even a SATA III HDD

This means that the PS3 comes equipped with a ford f150, on a 150mph highway (sataII HDD, on a SATAII board). Maybe you cant upgrade to a Ford f150 lightning (SATAIII HDD) which will still not maintain 150mph, but you can upgrade to an older model Ferrari (SATAII SSD) which WILL travel as close to the theoretical max speed of the highway as possible.

I hope that made sense.

In other words, even a SATAII SSD is faster than a SATAIII HDD, and WAY faster than the SATAII HDD that comes with the PS4.

Also, SATAIII HDD's are so cheap now, theres no reason NOT to include them, unless the board isnt SATAIII capable.

Installed a 1TB sata III drive no problems just make sure no bigger than 9.5mm I believe.
