What do you guys think? I mean there is no case or disc to supply yet they charge the same price. Doesn't make sense to me why they charge the same price. Let's start a petition. LOL

you're right but they want downloadables to be only an alternative with the upside only being convenience.. they don't want to lose money

The manufactured parts of the game are very cheap. It does not take much money to get the game onto a disc, print out a pamphlet, and slap it in plastic casing. The reason games are so expensive now is because of the time and money put into developing them. There is way more human effort put into games than ever, and developers have to make a profit.

Doesn't matter how much or little the disc and what not costs. It still costs something and I shouldn't have to pay if I don't get it. Also, I don't think they are selling the games to gamestop for the same price gamestop is selling them for. Gamestop is buying them and marking up the prices I would assume. So if we are eliminating the middle man, why then are we paying the same prices. Perhaps I'm missing something as I'm not pretending to know the ends and outs of the gaming industry market system but it just doesn't make sense to me. Also I'm not saying the price of games today should not cost more then games from generations past. I understand the technological advancement and the costs associated with them. I'm saying we shouldn't pay the same price for downloaded games as the physical copies of the same game.

I don't know if its just because I live in the United Kingdom but when I shop in places like Asda, Tesco etc they generally have the games at around £39.99 as opposed to £40-50 on the PS3 store so I don't really think it has much to do with case, manual etc. It must be development time which makes sense. However I can often find a better deal online than in the PSN store.
Should they drop in price? Yes and no. Yes because you don't have a lot of extras such as the case and manual but no because if the development time and cost is still high then they should charge full price.
On a side note: I don't think really the cost of the case and manual is put into consideration....

since you get 2 games they are cheaper. half price to be exact. I got 4 copies of GTAV for $120. The best deal yet has been AC4. I got 4 copies of that for $90. 2 copies on the PS3 for $80(season Pass) and the $10 upgrade allowed me 2 more copies on the PS4.

Exactly.. Im not saying the price difference should be 30 bucks, however im thinking simply between 5 and 10.

easy enough. I have 4 ps3's. I buy 1 digital copy I get 2 licenses. My wife gets a copy for her system and I get one for mine as I am activated on both. Then I buy the game with my sons account. he is activated on his and his brothers console. Therefore each console gets a copy of the game for half the cost of buying physical copies. So not only did I save $120 on GTAV I also saved $31.20 in taxes.
Now the PS4 upgrade is the better deal. I bought AC4 digital for 79.99 on the PS3. That gave me 2 copies of it. My console and the wifes. I then payed the $10 to upgrade it to the PS4. My oldest son can play it anytime he wants as his PS4 is the one I have made my home console. I just have to sign into my other sons he or I can play it at the same time as the other 3 consoles (2 PS3, 1 PS4) you can be signed into the PS3 and the PS4 at the same time.
If you only have one console you don't see the savings but if your spouse, kids or siblings have one you can. This can also be done with a friend but I don't recommend it

I did not know this and I'm willing to bet many others don't either. Unless I been sleeping and completely missed it. Can you message me with exact instructions on how to do this. I have 2 ps3s and a ps4. Any game I purchase on my ps4 can be downloaded on the ps3 as long as it is compatible?

I do think the digital copy is superior as the example above shows. I have two PS3s and any game I buy can be downloaded to the 2nd PS3 so I can play someone in the game online with only buying one copy.
However, it does cost developers more money to ship out copies (and keeps crap companies like Gamestop in business by giving you 20 bucks for trading in a 2 week old game and then selling it for $54.99). I just literally throw away old physical copies of games or give them away because I would rather do that than sell them to Gamestop. I do realize I could sell the on Ebay, Amazon, etc.
I do think if they would make $60 games $53 then they would make digital sales much more popular. The thing is that if you use a credit card and do not buy a PSN card then you are not charged tax (at least in my state). You are supposed to pay USE tax to the state government on your own but not many people do it.

Great responses. Yall are adding many aspects of each that I did not take into consideration such as being able to get a little of my money back after beating a game, by selling it after im done. Cant really do that with downloaded copies. This does not take away from the fact that I still think they should be cheaper. I agree that if they were then it would create a larger audience for purchasing them this way.

I'd agree to lowering the price on digital (of course) or at least having frequent deals on games. Like Steam-level discounts. Digital shouldn't sit around at its price for a long time with slight discounts.

Its very simple. Log onto your PSN id on your other system. Go to Account management, Transaction management, Download list and pick the game you want to download on that system. You must be activated on both systems for this to work. As for the PS4 you have to pay an extra $10 to upgrade and it only works for Injustice gods among us, AC4, BF4, C.O.D. Ghost What I am doing is perfectly with in the Sony TOU so there is absolutely nothing to worry about

if they discounted materials and shipping it would probably be about 2 or 3 dollars per game. You are paying for the 2+ years worth of money that it took to make the game. They don't make a profit on materials. Every dollar that they cut the price would be a loss unless they sell enough copies. A lot of promising video games that flop end up losing developers a lot of money.
You do get the games at the same prices. If you order 300,000 copies of COD:Ghost I promise you will get the same discount Gamestop does.
Same goes for shipping. They are not shipping one item for 7.50, they are shipping thousands. The prices for them to ship are substantially lower than joe shmoe.
All this rambling to reiterate, you are basically paying for the "digital" copy in the beginning. The physical copy and store and shipping are just an outdated means to transfer the game to your PS4.

I'd love if that happened but I doubt that they would. I agree that the discounts would be negligible at best because the reason for the prices isn't the disc or shipping costs but because of how much the development, man power, and marketing costs for a game is. There are a lot of people to pay and it's already a struggle for them to make money on a game.

I also think by reducing the price by even a small portion would increase peoples willingness to purchase seeing as I think for the same price people would rather have the hard copy.

I would love it but I doubt it will happen simply because the price is because of the production costs of the game. If anything if we got full digital then I see us getting Steam like sales in the future instead. They'll never lower the price of games that much because people have pretty much accepted the price.
