Side-Scroller Appreciation/General Thread

Anyone else miss side-scrollers? I know it's not really too rational to expect these now that graphics are so advanced already, but I do miss them badly because I like the simplicity of having only the choice of going right or left. I can't even remember playing any sidescrollers since the PS1 when I last played Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, which I thought was a totally awesome game btw, and I'm 100% sure it still holds up until now. How about you guys? Any memorable sidescrollers from PS1 - present day worth mentioning?

I can definitely still appreciate a good side-scroller! The best one I've played in recent years would definitely be the Scott Pilgrim vs. the World game. Yes, it's based on a movie (which is in turn based on a graphic novel) but it's a really great beat-em-up. It's really a great throwback to older games, especially arcade ones, and was really reminiscent of River City Ransom to me. If you haven't played a side-scroller in a long time, I'd definitely suggest checking that one out. It's on the Playstation Network - not too sure of the price, but it was reasonable!

I definitely liked the game Wild 9 and Assault Retribution for the PS 1. Both of them are 3D side scrollers. Assault Retribution reminds me of Contra for the NES. I also liked Odin Sphere for the PS 2. I think it could be classified as a side scroller too. Valkyrie Profile 2 was a side scrolling RPG for the PS 2 which looked absolutely beautiful.

When i hear about side-scrollers, i always remember Tomba/Tombi. Such a strange game, but i love it!
The gameplay feels fluid, the setting is funny and the soundtrack is catchy. Recently got it for PSN and been enjoying it, being surprised at the size of the game actually!
