SIIILEEEEEENT HIIIIIIL! SIIIIIIIIIIIIIILEEEEEEEEEEEEEENTT HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIILL!!!!!

Seriously, what could you say about it?

You could say that they could have put some kind of warning on the demo saying that this was a horror game, my 8 year self wasn't ready for such a masterpiece at the time.
Incredible example of how a series can rise so high, and ending up burning to a crisp after some years.

Harry is my favorite protagonist from the series so the first Silent Hill has a special place in my heart. That said my favorite is SH3 with Homecoming a close second. I sometimes wonder at how folks put down the later entries in the series. SH 4 was very creepy and had a very interesting storyline - it also cemented the odds and evens thing (Odd number titles being Goddess related/ Even number titles being Red God related). That said there was the inclusion of non-optional first person in places and the complete screw-up of inventory. Still it was a pretty good game overall. SH 5 (Origins) had no real story to speak of, but the character and the monsters were fascinating. I also liked the mirror thing (particularly since schizophrenia was a subthread). SH 6(Homecoming) had one of the best stories of the series, a couple of generally creepy moments, and some of the best monsters bar none. The only real issue I had was how movie-contaminated it was in some ways. SH 7 (Downpour) is very strange - it breaks the pattern and it has a storyline I don't much care for... I blame Heavy Rain for that. Still - Silent Hill is one of my favorite series and this was the start of it.

One of my favorite horror games on the PS1. I finished it multiple times because it had multiple endings. I loved the atmosphere, the story, the scares, the CG cut scenes... It was a tour de force by Konami. The beginning sequence of the game was one of the most frightening experiences of my video game life. My only complaint? I found the puzzles to be a bit hard before. I got stuck at the piano for days that I had to use a guide.

I honestly never got into the series. Back then, most people were either in the Resident Evil camp or Silent Hill camp and I was firmly in the former. I've tried to enjoy the first and second games but something about them just never grabs me. I love old school adventure games and they were slow as it gets but this series just feels TOO slow for me, I dunno what it is.

Maybe you like more action. The Resident Evil series has been known to deliver lots of gun toting action right from the start especially in RE2 and 3. Silent Hill on the other hand does not focus on action. It rather focuses on more atmospheric scares as compared to Resident Evil.

It definitely set a precedent for horror games along with Resident Evil. What I liked about Silent Hill was the way it used the fog to create anticipation. Plus, it had a better, less silly script than RE (which isn't saying much, Silent Hill didn't have a great script either).

I remember watching my cousin play this on his PS1. I thought it was a really scary game since I was just a kid. I regret playing it when my cousin handed me the controller.

Aw... "fear of the blood creates fear for the flesh"... or something. I was busy trying to find the perfect way of murdering every single creature in the game. Speed runs are important and creatures just sort of slow you down.
