Skyrim may be coming to Xbox One and PS4

Bethesda may be planning to release The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on Xbox One and PS4

OnlySP captured a screenshot of Bethesda's Skyrim website showing next-gen versions of the game listed alongside the existing Xbox 360, PS3 and PC editions.

It's unclear if the listing, which has since been removed, was an error or an inadvertent early reveal, but we've contacted Bethesda for clarification.

Adding fuel to the fire, a number of European Reddit users have reported receiving an email from Bethesda teasing a "very special announcement" this Sunday, January 12.

Skyrim launched in November 2011 and went on to win multiple Game of the Year awards. In June 2013, Bethesda released The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim Legendary Edition. The product features the main game as well as DLC packs Dawnguard, Hearthfire and Dragonborn.

Two months prior to the release of Legendary Edition, Bethesda said the Skyrim development had moved on to its next project after more than 16 months of post-release support for the title.

Turns out this was a bit of a non-article lol.

Update: Bethesda says Skyrim next-gen listings 'an error'

Update: Bethesda PR and marketing vice president Pete Hines has implied the company has no plans to release The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim on Xbox One and PS4.

He took to Twitter on Thursday to explain why next-gen listings for the game briefly appeared on Bethesda's website earlier this week, calling them an error.

"We have been working on the CMS that runs our sites," Hines said. "A bug caused platforms that don't exist to show up for some games Sorry for confusion."

He also labelled an email reportedly sent to Bethesda community members teasing a special announcement on January 12 a "fan hoax".

Exactly what would be the point of coming out with Skyrim on the PS4 and Xbox One? By now most people have definitely played them and even then its not like it wasn't a PC title as well to begin with?

Yeah, no Skyrim means we'll have to wait until Elder Scrolls VI lags its way onto the PS4

Oh it's sooooo going to snail its way onto PS4. Like Goku arriving to an important fight and people are dying left and right. That's the speed of Elder Scrolls and Fallout.

Even though their releases haven't been announced, I'm just eagerly waiting for the next Fallout and Elder Scroll games. You know they'll be on PS4 it's just a matter of when...a very long when.

For a moment, I was wondering how in the world it would be pragmatic for Skyrim to shift to next-gen. I mean, what salvages the PC game from having less activity is the fact that people can use mods. There’s even a YouTube channel that goes through mods on Skyrim, and it’s what can literally make Skyrim last forever depending on how the fan base and communal efforts fair with it.

You can find mods that allows the game to emulate hyper-realistic graphics (if you have a high-end graphics card that is), and much more. Having it for consoles stifles its opportunity to sustain itself for years to come. I still play some games that are decades old and still have a decent community to back it up. Of course, I'm not wanting to shun it down for potentially existing for consoles, it's just that PC may give it more sustainability.

You're actually absolutely right. The PC version's main thing (besides graphics) is the ability to mod. Skyrim on its own gives you a lot of hours of play, but mods will make it last forever. My computer can't handle Skyrim (it can even handle Oblivion on medium settings), but yeah Skyrim on PS4 wouldn't really make sense.

People really had hope for GTA V and Elder Scrolls V hitting PS4. Wow.

Oh it's sooooo going to snail its way onto PS4. Like Goku arriving to an important fight and people are dying left and right. That's the speed of Elder Scrolls and Fallout.

I always thought Goku could've gotten to the Vegeta fight faster without Nimbus. Bethesda being Dragon Ball Z slow is crazy.

You know, in true, there is just one thought crossing my mind whenever I read rumors and news about Bethesda developed stuff...

"WHENS FALLOUT 4?"

That is honestly ALL I want to know. If I see a headline such as "Bethesda set to start on new game." It's like "Maaaaan...I just want Fallout 4. Quit playing now, Bethesda."

Skyrim is already a couple of years old, I don't need it on the PS4 and X1. Honestly, Skyrim on the PS3 and 360 is already a very good game and doesn't really need the new gen treatment. I'd rather them spend the time and manpower on the next Fallout or Elder Scrolls sequel rather than dwelling on an old game.

Yeah that's really what I think. That's also how I feel about GTA V. I wouldn't put it above it popping up on say PSN in a few years at a discounted price--you know, Rockstar throws their stuff on the next generation console later on.

I knew this must have been false. There is no reason for them to bring Skyrim out for PS4. Surely everyone who wants to play it has played it. What's next?!

I wouldn't mind an anniversary edition of Morrowind to tie us over for the next Fallout or Elder Scrolls.

I would love to play Morrowind on PS4, but that would be an odd numbered anniversary. No one celebrates...12th anniversary of games with a release.

Morrowind on PS4 would be pretty cool. Actually any Bethesda RPG would be cool on PS4, but there's no reason for the same Skyrim reasons LinkZelda mentioned.

I would be all over Morrowind for PlayStation 4, man. Like if Bethesda just did a Rockstar once and said "Yeah we're ultra late on this, but here. Have an old Elder Scrolls game you could get for $5 on PC."
