So, how is DriveClub?

It's been out for a few days now. So it would be interesting to see what members here think of this game (after the mixed reviews circulating the world wide web)

So, what do you think about DriveClub for those who have played it?

If everything goes ok, I might be finally grabbing a PS4 (again) this week and I'm going to grab DriveClub while I'm at it too. So hopefully the game does not disappoint :D

Over to you guys and gals...

I've been playing this game for a couple of days now, and I find it really hard to play. You don't have to get first place, but complete objectives instead. But these usually consist of being in the top 3 or beating a certain lap time. The AI opponents are really tough, you'll have to be a professional race driver to pay this game properly. They could fix that by adding a difficulty level option. Both me and my friends are unable to get past the Amateur cup.

I played MotorStorm, Pacific Rift, and Apocalypse pretty religiously so I'm actually kinda good at Driveclub. I don't really like it that much, but I also haven't gotten to drive a lot of the nicer cars. It is fairly difficult.

From what Ive read so far it's a very pretty game with little depth that punishes you for the AI being dumb.
Still, havent played it yet. Will just play the PS+ version...whenever it finally available for download.

I've seen around an hour's worth of footage (no PS4 as of yet) as Driveclub was a game I've been keeping my eye on closely more or less since it was announced. Given it was delayed by what, close to a year, I was expecting it to be mind blowing. In that respect, from a spectator's point of view at least, it's been a little bit disappointing. I don't know if it's either been me thinking it would be something special given the amount of time it’s been delayed, or whether subconsciously I've been believing the hype (which I very rarely do these days).

Firstly, the positives. It seems like an updated version of Gran Turismo – a series I used to rate very highly until around the fourth game. I liked that formula. Graphically it looks fairly impressive in parts, especially water and car interiors, but no ground breaker in others. Around half of the tracks that I've seen look pretty good too. However I must stress I’m seeing this through YouTube, which typically always tends to tone things down a little so I'll happily stand corrected on this from people who physically have this game if their opinions differ.

It seems to be realistic in terms of car control/physics too, but again I can only comment on this as a spectator. You can see the understeer in front wheel drive cars, the grip and then inevitable understeer in four wheel drives and the twitching/tail happy effects of rear wheel drive. In many racing games, the rear wheel drive 'tail happy' antics are a little OTT compared to real life (especially in lesser-powered cars), but DriveClub seems to get it not far wrong.

I also enjoy all the weather effects I've seen so far. Especially sunset. They seem to have done well in creating lighting flares, dim patches e.t.c…

The negatives? The 'walkthrough' I've been seeing has been the full game, but it seems rather 'empty' for that. It doesn't have many features from what I've seen - unless my walkthrough guy simply hadn't got around to them yet. It seems pretty linear in how it’s played. There doesn’t appear to be any sort of licences to achieve in order to progress – simply skill points (or whatever they’re called) from the races. I'm not entirely sure if I like that yet. I don't even know if there's a simple time trial mode for the tracks in which you could perfect your skills before an actual race – or simply cruise along to admire the scenery. It would be a heck of an omission if it didn't.

I'm not fond of the damage done to the cars either. A few dints and heavy scratches seems to be about the worst I've seen so far. I don't actually mind a there being a lack of mechanical damage, I can overlook that, but it would be nice to have seen more realistic crumpling of bumpers and bodywork.

Car customisation doesn't bother me. It seems you only get to choose from one standard factory colour and then four or five different loud paint jobs. None of which attract me. I would have preferred it if it went along the lines of Gran Turismo and offered the factory range of colours that were/are actually available. However this is more of a matter of taste than an actual ‘negative’.

Another one is it seems you loose points of AI cars hit you – even though it's their fault. It's a reoccurring theme on the 'walkthrough' I've seen and it's been commented upon a couple of times now. I can understand if you've bashed into someone that you'd loose points, but when it's not your fault…? I can imagine some of the lengthier races having to be replayed more than necessary in order to progress because of this.

Without having the actual game or a PS4 to play it on (yet), I really comment on how it feels to play or how hard it is. All in all it appears to be a decent, although not groundbreaking, racing game.

Would it be something I'd get? Hmmm… It probably would, yes. I generally enjoy motor racing games of this nature as I like cars. I've had a bit of a break from this in recent years and I’d love to go back. As things stand if a sensibly priced bundle was to come up for this, I'd probably go for it. However, a bundle with Alien : Isolation would have to take the advantage. I'd never thought I'd say that a few weeks ago… I really don't want to sound too harsh to DriveClub because it's a decent overall game. However, it isn’t quite the racing experience I was expecting given the lengthy delay it had. I think that's more the problem than anything else.

That's what I like about ya' Haymansafc - you always give a great detailed opinion :)

It's not a long time, but I've played about 30-45 minutes and I know it's early but I like the game so far. But man, I need to learn to drift properly. The amount of crashes into walls I have done is shameful!

I have only played about an hour, but I liked it so far. It's definitely not easy, and I did not want it to be.

I am a past Forza/GT fanatic.

Can two people race each other or no? Not online multi racing but with two controllers, can both of us race each other? I am assuming no, since there is no split screen, right?

Correct. No split screen so unfortunately no local couch co-op :(

thanks for the details. I was wishing it were split screen but no luck. Guess I have to wait for some other racing type of game.. Thanks.

I would wait until they fix the multi-player option which is broken now. Also a free version is suppose to be released for ps+, try it first....

Well after playing a few hours i can say unless you just have some extra money to burn wait for something else. Atleast try the free PS+ version before you lay your money down. There isnt much to this game, the AI is terrible, and a lot of the features dont work. There aren't even that many options in this game to begin with. What the game has going for it is good courses and decent graphics.

Unless there is an option to modify your car I'm not seeing the only difference between a hard race and an easy one is the game will make the AI cars faster. Kinda disappointing when the exact same car goes flying past you and your maxed out on speed. Even worse when a car with lower stats go zooming by you. Only happens on certain races so maybe its a bug that needs to be worked out. Has not happened online with human opponents so I dont think its something I'm doing.

The AI plays bumper cars not only with you but the other Ai cars as well. Not too sure what thats about. With that said the AI may just be modeled after human online players because they do the same thing most of the time. If there was an option to get a refund on a digital copy of a game I would. This should have only been available as a free PS+ game. As a free game it would have scored better in my mind because expectations would have not been as high. A whole extra year due to the delay and this is the outcome. Kind of sad. Sony needs to have some sort of quality control to keep games like this from being released. Take in mind I dont think the game is a total piece of crap just not worth the $49 price tag.

things that need to be fixed or added:
Online - Get the functions already there working
AI - obviously. They are not hard but they drive like crap
add some actual circuts - not everything has to be a country road.
More cars or some type of modifications. Think GT not every car in the game has to be a 2015 model. Basic cars are fun to race as well.
Watch a replay of your race - even the most basic racing games have that option dont they.

Should I wait for another patch or delete it now is the only conundrum I have about this game. It can only get better from here but will it? I'm a pretty hard core Sony fan but I must say the other consoles have better racing games. Even GT is starting to fall behind. I have a feeling this is going to turn into a crappy micro transaction game but isn't that the direction most games are going now a days.

I've come to really enjoy driveclub. The feel when driving is a bit difficult to get used to and it's a bit like need for speeds handling, however, when you get used to it the game becomes a lot more enjoyable. Also people complain about the AI but I think they are actually quite good to race against especially when playing in legend difficulty. Overall, I really like this game but probably won't be playing it when Project Cars comes out :p

Think I'm about to give up on this game haha. I've played several hours worth now and it's just too stressful for me. Insanely difficult once you get above Level 20 (that may be due to me not being a big racing person - although I loved Motorstorm: Apocalypse) to the point where it feels like rubberbanding!
