Sony is improving the Eye, Yay?

I'm not really one for voice controls, the precise reason why I am not buying an Xbox One is because they are forcing the Kinect on us which increases the cost of the console and adds a peripheral that I don't necessarily want. At least the eye is something you can buy if you want it. But both companies really seem to think that voice recognition is the future, Sony with the limited controls that the eye accepts and the long list of Xbox One commands. I don't care but if both companies care about this so much than I'm probably in the minority. I really want to know what you guys think.

I'm indifferent toward voice controls. I'll give the Eye credit on being optional. A friend who is an Xbox fan keeps bringing up how the Kinect will actually be useful this time and I'm like "Don't caaaare...just don't." It's kind of the same with the Eye. It's not something that is "must have" to me.

I'm going to have to pick up an eye. I think this is just the future. A lot like the iPad controlling devices around the house. Many companies including direct tv, at&t, apple, and MS are really pushing it.

When we have 1:1 responsive controls, then i will say that i am convinced (a bit like Occulus Rift, that thing is close to perfection on it's own field, but i still think it has room for improvement for commercial use). Things like remote play, there will always going to be a few lag on the connection, so it's not made for perfect play, and just like the eye, i won't be using those types of features.

I prefer the gesture controls over voice controls. If they can work that out and make it even more convenient for me to interchange between TV, online browser, and games with just simple hand gestures, I'd be all for it. The Kinect seems to have a good concept on it, but it's a little too gimmicky for me, though it does still seem pretty nifty.

I'm going with "Yay?" Stuff like this kind of helps define the PS4 as more than a "moar powerful PS3 with moar grafix", but with Xbox doing something similar with the Kinect it's put back in that palette swap ninja position from last generation where it comes down to preference.

Or the stoic Asian devoted martial artists-cocky American friend who is an actor of some sort trope if you dig more fighting game comparisons.

The PS4's eye is less powerful and not as advanced as the Kinect but it seems to do a lot more with what little it has. From what I've seen it's far more accurate and because the voice controls aren't as complicated there isn't as much frustration. I do think improving the eye should be lower Sony's priority list but I'm willing to be reasonable since Double Fine has a game coming out soon.

Eh, I've personally never cared for the Eye back when I was on the PlayStation 2. Sure it was a neat little party toy, and some of the games were kind of hilarious, but I didn't pay the extra $100 to get it. As for now, if it comes packaged with later versions of the PlayStation 4, I still won't bother hooking it up. Like someone else said, the reason I'm not fond of the Xbox ONE is because they are FORCING the use of the Kinect, and that's not cool with me.

About time, I'd say. The PS2's eyetoy camera came early, but it was pretty limited in terms of what it could do. And if sony wants to compete with the new Kinect to any meaningful level, they're going to have to step their game up. And it's not just about getting a better camera either, a lot of it is on the software level (motion/voice recognition, etc.)

I really don't care for things like voice control and fancy cameras. I kinda wish they focused on making games rather than implementing stuff that nobody uses.

I agree, it's a gaming console. All I care about is the games. I have a smart TV with a smart receiver, a smart bluray player and a dedicated media PC hooked up to it... I think I have the whole digital media thing covered.
And besides.. I don't need a PS4 or an Xbox one to tell my TV what to do, I've been yelling at my TV for years and everything has been fine and dandy, I don't need it to start yelling back at me.

I've never been a fan of voice controls but the Eye is working well within it's limitations. I agree it's not as powerful as the Kinect but both are unnecessary and I don't see myself purchasing an eye in the future. I also don't want a Kinect but I hear that the Xbox One UI is grafted in such a way that the Kinect is kind of necessary, I just want a console not the fancy toys.

I am honestly a BIG fan of the Eye and I find it WAY better the Xbox's Kinect due to the fact that it is more precise and accurate with its readings. I honestly hope that the improvement will be decent as I cannot wait to enjoy the PS4 once it reaches my doorsteps soon!

I think they should just stick to gameplay. let's be honest, the Move didn't go over super well. I think Sony should stick to what they are good at and what their market demands, high quality next gen games.

I agree, they should focus more on gameplay and making sure everything is comfortable for all gamers. I enjoy the EYE, but I will be honest. I enjoyed the Xbox Kinect more than the EYE. That's saying something coming from a hardcore Playstation fan.

I do't hate the Eye, for what it is it does a pretty good job. It's just a silly peripheral that's fun but not really as advanced as the Kinect. If it's improved that's nice but motion/voice controls aren't something that I've ever been really interested in but I guess if the Eye is eventually going to compete with the Kinect they need to make it better.

Honestly sounds like Kinect 2.0 is what you are looking for. You can navigate all of the consoles features using hand gestures and voice commands. Sony simply has not put the work into it that Microsoft has. Sony's gone for the demographic that finds the camera to be a neat accessory, while Microsoft has gone the other route by making it central to the Xbox experience.
