Sony not expecting this gen to last as long as the last one

I hear that they are not even close to tapping in to the PS4's hardware potential. Heck, they have only just started to get the goods out of the PS3. I am pretty sure this generation will last a while.

Thinks really do depend on the technology and how it advances over the next 5-10 years. If there are huge leaps then sure I could see this console cycle not lasting as long. However we haven't seen the true potential of either the Xbox One or PS4. The games that were specifically designed with the next-gen consoles haven't been released yet. It's just talk by Sony for now.

Yeah, Sony is just trying to get people talking but we still don't know what the PS4 is capable of. In fact we never know how much juice a developer can squeeze out of a console until near the end of its life cycle. Like someone said earlier we're only now seeing what the PS3 has going for it. Sony is getting some press, but unless VR goggles become a thing, I think we're safe.

We're always getting closer and closer to VR goggles (which will be a cumbersome mess, but will still sell).

I believe even if we see what juice the PS4 has and that's the maximum say 4-5 years in, games will keep being made at a furious-steady pace 2 years after that.

Playstation still supports PS2's. It will be a long time in gaming years for there to be a PS5, whats next for the consoles?

Even though they still support the PS2, doesn't mean there wasn't a PS3 and even a PS4 released. When Sony says the generation won't last as long, maybe they are just referring to how quickly the PS5 will come out and not necessarily that support for PS4 will end. I really don't think Sony has much of a say in how long the generation will last. I mean, they do have some say, but, ultimately consumers will dictate this. If they continue to buy the PS4 in huge numbers, Sony will continue to support the console and reap the benefits. If consumers show they don't want the console, they Sony will adjust their strategy accordingly.

True. Even if the PS5 comes out sooner than expected that doesn't mean that Sony would abandon the PS4. Also I highly doubt that Sony would release a new console any time soon. They are finally recouping the losses that they made on the PS3 and the PS4 sales will be a huge part of that. Until they get back more of their money or there is a gigantic leap in technology, I doubt we'll see another PS for a while.

Surely Sony didn't make loses on the PS3?

Won't the next release not be a cloud service than actual hardware in our homes?

At the moment who is to say, say they start developing the PS5 in 5 years time, gaming technology and demand could have drastically have changed. I do think cloud gaming might be a major feature, but I reckon we aren't to far from it just now with the PS4.

Maybe future updates will allow this as the workload for cloud gaming is on the servers and internet download speed, not on the console itself.

Sarcasm? They lost a ton of money on the PS3. It sold for a loss initially and took a few years before they were able to sell it for a profit. The R&D was also high because they were using new technology such as Blu-ray and Cell.

Honestly doesn't surprise me, what with the way technology is progressing. I predict that in 5-6 years we will be at the start of the next generation, could be a little sooner than that actually, depending on how long they drag it out.

You're right dude, there's this 6-12 month thing where not only scientists but technology nerds like us get together and progress in that time frame and make things 5 years beyond their time. There's a new engine coming out I think that basically uses less polygons or actually it's not polygons, it's something new. I can't remember nor can I find it on google but if it ever makes it, no one would use any game engine but that.

I think that we're pretty safe from PS5's and Xbox (whatever they decide to name it) for a while. Both companies have to recoup their losses, Sony more than Microsoft. Then we'll start to hear news about new consoles. But it's just Sony trying to get hype, I highly doubt that the parent company will be willing to shell out more money until the PS4 starts making it's money back and their more financially stable.

I just hope they don't literally call it a PS5. It's bad enough they're continuing the number thing now, I thought PS3 was excessive but this is just silly. At any rate, it's going to be difficult to differentiate later on between the consoles if they're all numbered arbitrarily.

Seeing how fast technology is evolving, I wouldn't be surprised if PS4 lasted half as long as the PS3. I mean the PS1 lasted twice as long as the PS3. As long as technology changes as years go by, then you should expect the next gen a lot sooner than expected!

Nah, after four they'll start naming their consoles after cats or dogs.

I don't know what they'd name the new PS but God knows that Xbox One is a stupid name. Other than that, yeah the technology becoming more advanced everyday and I really want to see what a new console would entail. But I think were safe from it for a while. They have a lot of cash to make back.
