Sony Says They Need Nintendo To Stay Successful

Well, reading about this just warmed my heart right up. Sony is really doing great recently, and with moves like these, I think they will maintain their good image for a long time, not that I'm saying they're doing it for image. I actually think this makes sense, Nintendo is for an entirely different market anyway. What say you?

Sony: We Need Nintendo To Be “Very Successful”

In order to preserve traditional gaming – via dedicated controllers with actual buttons and analog sticks – the executive suggests that Nintendo and Sony must coexist in a world where touch-based gaming by way of smartphones and tablets continues to gain popularity. Yoshida, who owns two Wii U consoles, classifies both firms as being in the same category and not as direct competitors.

Yoshida: “Well I have two Wii Us. I play Wii U games with my daughters, because they make pretty fun family friendly games.

“When you look at the situation around Nintendo that way, do you characterize Nintendo as our competition? I think in the bigger scale of things happening in the industry or tech or people’s lives, how they play games on what device, and how they start to learn to play games, I think Nintendo and us are pretty much in the same group, and we need Nintendo to be very successful to help induct as many consumers who like to play games with controllers, right?”

Its true though. For most gamers, a Nintendo is the first console they had experience with. Nintendo consoles tend to be kid friendly but also have great, more mature titles available. Nintendo consoles and games have always been "accessible". My mom played Nintendo games and SNES games and even Wii games. We couldnt get her to touch our XBox though.

Sony has the right idea.

It's sad that the rabid fanboys ruin the images of Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo. There's so much hate between fanbases, and sometimes it gets particularly out of hand - I still can't quite believe what happened after Bayonetta 2 was announced as a Wii U exclusive.

Even though I'm primarily a Nintendo gamer, I have a huge amount of respect for Sony and the way they handle themselves. The PS4 and Wii U are targeting two very different sets of gamers, but they both realise it and allow each other to coexist. It means that I can play Mario and Zelda, but then when I want to play the grittier Sony exclusives, I have the means of doing so. Microsoft, on the other hand, haven't been quite as classy - I remember the stories of Microsoft employees turning up at stores demoing Wii U games, and telling people that they'd be much happier if they ordered an Xbox instead.

In the end, everyone can only benefit from all three companies thriving, and all three consoles being successful. The more options we have, the better the games will be. Some people need to understand that.

Yeah, I agree that the console wars are just a front for people to have something to debate about. I’m mostly a Nintendo Fan myself, but I love being flexible with other consoles. More games means more chances for me to learn how to be vicarious of the video game character’s position.

Different consoles cater for different types of audience, and if all major console powerhouses ended up doing the same concept with controllers, there wouldn’t be much originality in the first place.

Nintendo made a brilliant decision gearing their products to families and non-traditional gaming demographics. Now Sony is saying they need them to co-exist, to sort of groom young players into future gamers. I did not see that one coming.

I agree with corporatenoun. I didn't see that one coming.

In my opinion, these consoles all seem to coexist as partners in the industry rather than competitors. While I can go to Nintendo to fulfill my lazy days with games to play with friends, I can go to my PlayStation 2 to kick some butt in an RPG or roam freely in a more open world, and later on I can hit the XBOX360 for my zombie needs. I find good qualities with each system, and I think that each one can benefit from the other in some way or form. That could be from ideas, suggestions, or setting examples.

Awww, Sony getting all cute and cuddly with Nintendo. Yeah, I think there's some logic in this. They complement each other. Let's face it, Nintendo will always be for kids and the playstation will be considered as geared more for adults. But where does that leave Microsoft?

I'm really glad Nintendo and Sony are here for us. Can you imagine how things would be if Microsoft had a monopoly like the do with Windows?
I mean, Nintendo games usually focus more on the gameplay, while Sony focuses more on delivering a great interactive experience. I think both companies complement each other very well.
