Sony tested contollers to detect Sweaty Palms

Sony lead architect Mark Cerny has stated that they tested different models of the DualShock 4 controller including one that measured stress from sweaty hands.Unfortunately the games teams were unable to find a way to implement this breakthrough so won't be featured anytime soon. I think they missed an opportunity here the Xbox corporate model will probably include a lie detector!

That's an awesome bit of information. I mean who wants sweaty palms in the first place. I think that'd be one of the more awesome jobs for a designer. You helped design a game controller. I'd want it to be first party though, doesn't seem like many people would care who designed third party stuff.

First time I read it I thought it was designing some way to avoid sweaty hands but it's actually using sweaty palms as an input?
They could go one step further and give you special items if you have Cheeto dust on your hands :) it's a marketing dream!

I think because most games are centered around building and releasing tension they were interested in real time feedback of stress. Most people perspire under stress so they were just measuring the galvanic reaction.

I really do not think it would be useful for players ...
What I like is that Sony has explored all the ways to ensure that we have an excellent controllers.

The opinion on the Dualshock 4 are very positive for the moment! I can not wait to have it in hand.

That's great news. As much as I love the current dualshock the plastic handles could get pretty slippery when your palms got sweaty. But the rubber grips on the dualshock 4 seem to be decent improvement , providing that they can actually implement it.

I find that kind of weird, why would you need that in a sweat detector. I can understand the rubber since that will help with grip but a notification like "Palms area sweaty, mom's spaghetti."

Also maybe if Xbox puts a lie detector in their controllers someone can finally find a use for the darn thing.

It's defiantly creepy I think that's why they ditched it but at least they are exploring different way for people to interact.

I'm glad they're trying to innovate as much as they are, and I'm even happier that they are smart enough to scrap some of the more unnecessary ideas. I think consoles will soon incorporate something like this in the future, just because it seems inevitable as we fill out more and more additions to the whole gaming experience.

Sony's really trying to add alot of features to the ps4. A sweat detector seems kind of odd, I feel like I'm getting stalked if everything I'm sweating, on the screen it says "Sweaty Palms Detected". I wonder why Sony would decide to implement this. But, maybe they have something bigger with this planned.

That's kind of weird. My hands sweat a lot, but it isn't really from stress. I tend to wipe my hands off periodically when I'm playing, too, so I can grip the controller better. I'm surprised they haven't put some kind of rubberized grip on the controllers yet, but I doubt that will happen.

I'm not exactly sure how that feature is of any benefit, but maybe that's just me. Regardless of playing an FPS, horror, fighting, or action game, the tension of the situation doesn't make my palms sweat. Still, I think rubber grips would be pretty comfortable and ergonomic.

This would be perfect for Horror base games! >=D controller detects your palms sweating, then spawns more Monsters to freak you the hell out! lol

LOL! Ridiculous! It's not sweaty palms most men worry about anyways, it's other areas that sweat that can be embarrassing. If my girlfriend walked in on me playing PS4, and my palms were sweating, I wouldn't be as embarrassed as if it were my armpits or back.

They could have put little fans like one controller that i have has. That thing cools off your hands and it's really good, so i don't see why they didn't implement something like that.

Fairly interesting to know. I can't think of a way how this feature would affect the game much though. I suppose if it detects your palms getting sweaty (many people's palms don't sweat much, others do) then this could lead to the game becoming scarier? I suppose another good idea would be to monitor your breathing (this could be good for use with sniper rifles in order to balance the view from the scope!) but then maybe this overly-close interactiveness is getting a little creepy...
