Sony Working on PlayStation 4 VR Headset

It looks like Sony is working on a VR headset to rival the Oculus Rift. Its unclear whether this will make its way to the PS4 but it sure shows that Sony and MS are really going at each other for this Generation.

Details about the device are thin on the ground, but it's apparently been demonstrated internally with DriveClub. When used in conjunction with the racer from Evolution Studios, players can look around the cockpit of the car they're in to check out the high level of detail up-close. Eurogamer points out that Evolution's studio is also where Sony's World Wide Studios Stereoscopic 3D team hangs is hat, so it makes sense that DriveClub has been tested with the device.

While Sony is resolutely refusing to say anything concrete, when Shuhei Yoshida was asked by the site at Gamescom whether the company was investigating a VR headset for use with the PlayStation 4, he replied, "We don't talk about that."

Sony to reveal PS4 Virtual Reality headset at TGS

Sony is preparing to reveal the final piece of its PS4 hardware strategy at TGS by showcasing a PlayStation-branded virtual reality head-mounted display, CVG has learned.

So this is Sony's own VR and not anything else out there. This is interesting, surely Sony is really going for it and this is an area that will get a lot of attention. I think comparing this with Driveclub to Forza with Kinect tracking really gives Sony an edge.

I feel bad about the Oculus Rift though. It's already there for the taking. There have already been a lot of tests made. Why not just make a partnership with the OR rather than develop a new VR headset? I do hope Sony would come out on top with this one.

It'll be interesting to see what Sony does as compared to the Oculus Rift. They might knock the Rift out of the market, or they might fall flat. Either way, it'll be a neat thing to watch unfold.

Have you seen how much it consts? It's really expensive and out of my reach. hey just have to lower down the price IMO.

I've been waiting for this type of technology for what seems like forever. I really think this is the future of gaming. There is a virtual reality headset featured on one of the season 2 episodes of the sci fi series Continuum. That spurred my mind and I began thinking about the days of virtual boy by Nintendo and how no gaming companies have taken the leap into a mainstream virtual reality oriented console since that one. Bring it on. As long as it is good I would pay top dollar.

I'm personally not that excited about VR, but I have to admit that I'm curious to see how it plays out. I feel like it's a bit of a gimmick, not far from what the Kinect seems to be, but to be perfectly honest I see that as being a lot less gimmick-y than the whole VR "craze" especially if they just focus on it and develop it further or at least find a way of making better use of it.

OMG I would love to have a VR headset. I would have it on all the time. My life isn't that exciting so I could make it more exciting with VR. But I have one problem with it. When you have the headset on you won't be able to see anything around you so people might take advantage of that. I think you know what I mean.

This is exactly why I think VR has huge potential. So many people want to escape reality that badly that they would wear a VR headset around for the majority of their waking hours away from school/work. It's a little bit sad but a testament to the times that we live in. If you've ever watched that cartoon Batman Beyond then you will see a lot of technologies similar to VR as the series is set in the future

Do you happen to know the name of the headset? I'm very interested in this because I am constantly on PlayStation, talking with my friends while I'm playing mind games. I like to play COD and am also on Home a lot. It would be nice to see some screenshots of this headset. I wonder if there has been anything linked onto the Internet. If you have any news about it, let me know.

It will great to listen to gaming music via the new headphones especially designed for playstation. It will increase the quality of our gaming experience while playing games, I am waiting for playstation 4 eagerly.

They can't do a partnership since Facebook already bought the Oculus Rift and you know how Sony is with their technology. It always has to be something new, slick and mind blowing. I doubt that they'd want to just partner and improve an item which they would probably overhaul as well once they team up. Also I imagine that creating their own would be cheaper than buying a partnership with the Oculus and it would mean more profit for them too. Honestly I think that Sony's VR headset will be better than the Oculus. Even without considering the budget that they've approved for it, Sony has more experience in this type of thing after all.
