I'm dreadful at FPS games whether they're new or old. I just don't have that outright, absolute precision control required for them that so many gamers have – and I've been a gamer since the very late eighties, so that's a quarter of a century! I just can't play them to save my life. As I said in another thread only recently, if you give me a target, I could guarantee to you that I'd shoot more or less perfectly around it's outline without actually hitting the object/target once. I find the analogue/dual shock sticks either too sensitive and end up turning me immediately 45 degrees one way or another, or are so sluggish that I'm dead before I've had chance to move the 'dot' over to the correct spot

. As for using scopes for even more precision shooting – forget it! It's one of the reasons why I just don't like FPS titles.
That reminds me, actually. One game that I know my skills have notably deteriorated on is the first few from the Quake series. I didn't mind these early FPS games and I could master them. I went back to the early titles a good few years back after a long break and dear me…I was
appalling. I spent more time dead than I did alive. I think a lot of that was having to readjust myself back to the graphics of the time…! That's the excuse I'm sticking with, anyway!
Turning this topic on it's head, whilst I've not played them in years, I'm still pretty confident I could get through Tomb Raider 1 and 2 quickly and efficiently with little effort. I played them to death. The same goes for the first two Resident Evil titles and Silent Hill 2 for that matter. I hate to sound a bit big-headed about that but if there's anything I could do and still do well, I'm pretty sure it would be those five.
Away from the Playstation, I would love to give the arcade version of the original Daytona USA a go again. I had that game pretty much mastered on all three courses - with manual transmission. I dread to think of how many £1 coins I chucked into that machine over around a seven/eight year period from it's launch. I can still hear it's "
Baby allllrighhhhht" tune in my head as clear as day. It's one of few arcade racers where I've actually felt 'connection' to the car in the game. The wheel was very well weighted in it. I bet if I went back to it now a 12 year old would probably beat me...
In reflection Daytona USA 2 was pretty horrid as an arcade racer in comparison. All cars had a habit of understeering which then snapped into massive oversteer with almost no warning. I never quite got used to that and think I only managed a 1st place finish three, maybe four times...
