The appearance of micro transactions in $60 games

Its becoming quite evident that game developers are adding more and more micro-transactions into games that are playing more and more of an active role.

I'd like to use the example of Assassins Creed Unity. Assassins Creed Unity cost around $60 or £40 give or take 10. Now this is a full price game yet it contained Micro Transactions that we'd commonly see in free to play games. One thing I noticed though was the designed the equipment system to make it tempting to buy. They purposely put a grind in to make us buy these "Helix" credits. It wasn't like they just put these in for those who want no grind what so ever but I was on sequence 5 and I hadn't really earned too much money....I'm still on sequence 5 and I've played a lot of co-op and you do earn some nice money in co-op but you'll find a lot of the top level items cost around 125000 and to earn that kind of money you'd have to grind out on these co-op missions for such a long time that it almost becomes.....boring and they've designed the game around purchasing these Helix credits to eliminate the grind. They did this with GTA Online when it launched on PS3 and 360 they made the game so grind like that people got fed up with it.

These are full price games that are containing micro transactions that are designed to make you purchase them. The question is why? Well its obviously they want more money which is fair but at the same time they could do it by introducing time saver packs or character skins or more weapon packs or something like that but actually implementing in game currency and making the game more grind like, will and does put people off and will eventually just destroy the franchise.

I've actually stopped playing AC Unity and I'm only on sequence 5 because I can't be bothered to go back into the game and grind away to get stuff to then play more story. Now I could go through the story having crappy equipment but they spent a lot of time developing a skill system to use in these missions so it makes sense to gear your character up well but at the same time I have to grind to do that.

You find me completely agree with you Derri.
Speaking about AC Unity, they also tricked us with this Companion App, which doesn't add anything to the game, except maybe if you like to watch the gameplay on TV and the map on a PC or Tablet. I still do not understand the value of such app, while it comes evident if I think about the microcredit, which icons are everywhere in that app. I bought AC Unity on day1 for 70 Euros, its full price, why should I give them more money? I won't, for sure. It's not for the money itself, but the conceipt, the idea bothers me very much. I bought a, let's say, not complete game in other words. It sux delux. I still play AC Unity because I want to finish it, but this is my last game of the AC serie.

The only way to get rid of microcredit is to avoid it. If all gamers do not spend a coin on that, the developers will remove it. It's so simple that it's impossible :grin
