The PS1 loading screen of death..

deathbyprayer

I can't tell you how many times I've experienced this problem when I was a kid. The PS1 is notorious for its unusually long loading times, especially when it comes to games that has one too many polygon count and epic visuals. I've experienced having to reboot my PS1 10 times just to make it load my game, have you ever experienced this?

You mean when it was stuck on the Playstation opening screen like this?

And then it would just sit there and you would have press reset.
Yeah,I remember having that a fair bit now,I didnt think anything of it at the time though.

Or do you mean while in a game? Not sure I had that to often then.
In any case,I wouldnt call it 'loading screen of death' myself as its not like the system gets bricked after that,it just needs a reset.

The frozen load screen was pretty bad, but nothing a reset couldn't fix. Now a long/hanging load screen in game when transitioning rooms--that was awful

I never experienced a longer loading time for my games for the PS1, but only insofar as my original PS1 games are concerned. As far as pirated games are concerned, that is where the loading time takes longer, because the lens reader tries to adjust to the game data. At first you may not notice that the lens reader is working extra just for it to make the pirated game play, but in the long term the lens reader will eventually give in and stop functioning properly.

PS1 games took forever between transitions and going into animated cutscenes. When I'd see that in FF7 and FF8 I'd say "I hope this isn't the future." The load times improved dramatically...but we still got movies.

I don't think I've ever experienced a loading screen that meant permanent damage, but I do know what you are talking about when you say you get stuck on the initial loading screen a lot of times because I went through the same with my PS1. As it got old, I had to start making some tweaks on how to start it up, including having to tilt it while loading and during gameplay, and sometimes I even had to turn it all the way over just to get it to work. Near the end of the life of that console, I really was seeing that loading screen a lot more times than I cared for.

Yeah I've never had a load screen with permanent damage. lol I've done the console tilt thing several times. There's also the inconsistent loads where sometimes it would be lengthy and other times it would be quicker (by PSX standards).

You know what I hate the most? It was when a game would load just before you could save right after a very difficult boss battle. This would really make me nervous as I would always think that the game would hang before I could save (which has happened to me a couple of times quite frankly).

Aww that had to suck. I used to hate when there was another cutscene after a boss and I wanted to save. Sometimes there would be freezing. This was before Square Enix introduced the skip scene--which I still say is the best thing they've done in the past 13 years besides FF Tactics A2 and Dragon Quest IX.

It can certainly be annoying and frustrating when all of those things happen. I know it has happened to me plenty of times and I really wasn't happy when it did.

I definitely remember this loading screen of death. At least the PS1 intro was epic enough! I could almost predict when it was going to do that sometimes. Then other times it would take unusually long, but get it's mind together and play the game with no further problems. It depended on the mood the PS was in.

I have never had any issues with my original PlayStation 1, I have had it for nearly 20 years. I can still turn it on and it works just like the day I got it. Knock on wood.
