The *real* PSX (aka, why was Playstation called PSX?)

So, I was thinking about this.. Why was the generally accepted shorthand for the first PlayStation "PSX"? Where did the X come from, anyway, why didn't we all just call it the PS? And, knowing this, why did Sony release a console named PSX based on the Playstation 2, almost 10 years after Playstation came out?

I can't post links, but if you didn't know what the actual PSX was, this is what Wikipedia is saying about it:
The PSX (ピーエスエックス Pī Esu Ekkusu?), also known as the PlayStation X (プレイステーションエックス Pureisutēshon Ekkusu?), was a Sony digital video recorder with a fully integrated PlayStation 2 video game console. It was released in Japan on December 13, 2003. Since it was designed to be a general-purpose consumer video device, it was marketed by the main Sony Corporation instead of Sony Computer Entertainment. It was the first Sony product to utilize the XrossMediaBar (XMB) interface. Its high cost resulted in a lack of consumer interest.[1] The PSX was never released outside Japan.

Wiki also mentions something about PSP support for the later models, but they aren't really elaborating on what the actual support was.

So, what do you think about all of this? :)

Off topic but, has anyone ever noticed the Japanese translations for america bound products are just super lazy? It comes down to a japanese pronunciation of an english word term or phrase.

Pi Esu Ekkusu ? Pureisuteshon? Guran Tsurisimo?

the list goes on! Whats up with this?

It's just a basic way to know how to pronounce it without the need of hearing it. Of course not everyone is going to pronounce it like that really slow so it sounds weird.

Check out this topic:
I also made a post about that in that thread.

Oh, sorry, my bad. :( It's not too easy to search for "PSX" here. :x

Those aren't translations, those are just transcriptions. There is no reason to translate a product in each region, quite on the contrary, it would be pretty stupid.

Its fine, thats a diff topic to this one, just pointing out a post I made there which has info on the 'real' PSX like the topic you made here . :o

I'm just now seeing this. I use PSX when referring to the PS1. I remember there were some gaming magazines in the 90s that referred to it as the PSX as well as a few Game Cave adverts in the back of catalogs for import games.

I think I made a topic on that a while back but it was locked because this one exists. What I know is that PSX was actually a video recorder merged with a PS1 and available only in Japan. Apparently, it flopped because it was too expensive.

They must have been really excited about putting a PS2 and a recorder together to think it would sell at the price tag they put on it. The thing I did like about it was it came with internet ability from the start...that's about it though. Control ports in the back seems odd.

I didn't know about the 'real' PSX untill like 3 or 4 years ago. I just think the X stands for a blank since because the later PlayStations were labeled as PS2, PS3, PS4. Sometimes, I say PS1 though.
