The Zombie Genre

I am a huge fan of the Zombie genre in movies/tv and would really like to see a zombie game that is more similar to a 28 Days Later or Walking Dead. I have played the Dead Rising titles and really disliked them. They are a little to fast paced and choatic for my taste, similar to the Left 4 Dead titles. The Left 4 Dead games were fun but mostly due to the ability to play online with my friends. I don't think I would have enjoyed them otherwise. I didn't like that there were "special" zombies that were diffrent and supperior to the others. All zombies should be created equal. The difficulty should come with their numbers. I have a deep love for Rock Star Games and would love to see them do something with the zombie genre. I want an open world game that would resemble the game Infamous but replace the super powers with zombies.

Any one know of a zombie game that would be a little more to my liking?

Any ideas for future zombie genre titles?

I actually always like to see all of the new zombie games since the stories can get really interesting, and I've always been a big Resident Evil fan (though I guess that isn't entirely zombies). However, I am extremely wimpy and much prefer watching someone play the zombie games as opposed to playing them myself.

I definitely recommend you checking out Undead Nightmare, especially if you are a fan of Rockstar games. That game was a spin off of Red Dead Redemption, using the same map and characters, however with a new storyline involving the Zombie Apocalypse. I've gone through the entire game twice and it really was a cool game.

I've personally had my fill of this zombie craze thing. There are some things I like that fall into that category. But I like them for what they are. Like the Walking Dead comics. I like them for the story itself, not the zombie effect.

I agree with 4justice. All the tropes have become too commonplace. When I see something in the genre that defies the contrived, I appreciate it that much more.

For this reason, you should check out The Last of Us. The flesh-eating horrors are still there, but there is great reward for exploration, and the nature of the living dead is very original and well-thought out (as is everything else about the game).

All zombies should be created equal.

I think you'll have to maybe wait for next gen. There are a couple of games coming down for them that you'll be sure to like. One of them is Dying Light - it's kind of like Mirror's Edge meets Left 4 Dead except that there are no special types that I know of. You won't like Dead Island since there are special types, you won't like Dead Space I suppose... geeze. Oh! Have you look at the various Walking Dead games? Or that one... game which has a title I've forgotten... it was a game without a pause button that has permanent deaths. You have to build and sustain a community against an endless number of the walking dead. I should go look up the title for you.

Dead Rising 2 and Dead Rising 2 Off the Record come to the top of my mind, those two are really fun. Dead Island i's... certainly a game, you should get it if you see yourself enjoying something like that. Call of Duty Black Ops 2 has a zombie mode, i think, i only heard of it.

The OP already played them and hated them rather a lot. They want something more survivor and less humor. They also dislike Dead Island because of the types I guess. They're kind of hard to recommend things for in terms of zombies... I think Dying Light would be their best bet maybe. Also maybe the Last of Us.

I'm amazed at how many people enjoy the zombie genre both in video games and movies. To me it lost its appeal after the first Resident Evil game. How many times can the same story be sold over and over to the public? I guess it is limitless when you look at how many Batman, Superman and Spiderman movies have been made. What is so appealing about killing zombies over and over? Doesn't it grow old? Don't you want something new to toy around with? I'm becoming more and more disappointed with my fellow man as the days go by. We need some fresh ideas for movies and games.

Even though I think the zombie craze is played out, I have always liked the zombie maps on the Call of Duty multiplayer platform. I don't even bother with the VS play anymore. I just go right for the zombies.

Yep this game sounds awesome. I think its pretty heavily rumoured or confirmed? that Left 4 Dead 3 is coming.

If you have a gaming PC, I strongly recommend looking back into Left 4 Dead 1/2 on PC, the modding community is really great.

I also want the zombies to be real threats that are super aware (I think World War Z style zombies would be cool). It would be a challenging game but I feel it'd be something original. Dead Island wasn't very easy as I recall, but okay - that said there are a few games with cycles and such, but they're either buggy or haven't yet been released. Also what do you mean by WWZ zombie? I doubt you're talking about the book since those are classic Romero-style zombies... I'm not sure what the heck the movie version were although I'll never forgive Brad Pitt for what he did to my beloved modern classic.

Thought I'd quickly add, Day Z is a zombie game (mod of Arma) that everyone should play. Truly unlike anything else.

Think they are working on an official standalone release.

Wow! I just checked out that Dying Light Gameplay video. It looks amazing. I was a big fan of Mirror's Edge so this seems like it will be right up my alley. Thanks for that suggestions guys.

The unique thing about zombie games is that feeling you get as a wave of zombies slowly overwhelm your position and you know that there's probably no way out of the situation. It's both scary and thrilling at the same time. I don't know of any other genre that gives me that feeling.

I'm just referring to the frantic-ness of the zombies. They were climbing over each other, super fast and super sensitive. Zombies are pretty passive in zombie games nowadays. I think it'd be a nice change of pace even if it overwhelms the player.

Children are regularly sold in sexual slavery, America is still racist, rape still requires the victim to prove themselves worthy of justice, and sexism just doesn't matter enough - but OMG all of that pales in comparison to not having "fresh" ideas for movies and games. Well at least you have your priorities straight.

Seriously though - if the last time you "played a zombie game" was Resident Evil then you don't actually know anything about what stories are being used or the gameplay in place. I mean The Last of Us isn't anything like RE 5 which isn't much like Dead Island and nothing like Dead Rising. Some stories are more silly - Lollipop Chainsaw and Dead Rising, but others are more serious - Last of Us, RE 4, Dying Light. Besides which there are no new ideas only repackaging of the old. Incredible Hulk? Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde repackaged.

Oh, well sorry our love of horror and such is so deeply disappointing to you.
