Twitch shuts down Playroom

Congrats Internet this is why we can't have nice things. By now a lot of you have heard about the issues with the Playroom Twitch stream, that people are ruining things by showing off a lot of nudity. The height of the controversy hit when some jerkoff stripped his wife naked. At first Twitch was just laying down the banhammer on people but now they've shut the service down. Because of course some idiots had to ruin it.

That's actually pretty amusing. As long as gameplay itself on PS4 isn't affected, I'm okay with it, and judging from the statement in the article it doesn't look permanent anyway. I don't know if there would be a better solution, but seeing as PS4 has a porn app they don't seem too avert to nudity or raunchiness anyway. Maybe they should just have a playroom independent of Twitch?

I was not intending on using Twitch anyway. Although I agree, that there will always be people who do dumb stuff and mess it up for the rest of us. You have to just live with it, because there is really nothing you can do about it.

Well that sucks, but it was bound to happen. Oddly Twitch doesn't have this problem with other streams doing nudity and stupid stuff.

Sidd reminded me that PS4 allows for Ustream streaming, that service isn't bad, but at times it's as dead as the Capital Wasteland depending on what you're looking for.

It really isn't surprising when you think about it. A lot of casuals and gamers don't use Twitch or any live streaming services and now that they have access to them of course you have abuses. Abuses that got them banned and ultimately the service shut down, but it's something I thought might happen. Give people that kind of access and some will ruin it for everyone.

The thing is that Sony made it way to easy for people to stream on Twitch and Ustream. The regulars on the site have to get a capture card, make sure their gaming rig can run the game and the streaming PC can do the job in the case of consoles (basically make a production of streaming as opposed to just streaming) tend not to flash their stuff and all of that.

The most you get are people performing miracles live on stream and screen watching during FPS.

This is why we can't have nice things.

I was watching another stream when that happened (a War Z one) when the miracle happened. It reached our stream and things blew up. They really stayed on that guy's case.

Seriously? Is this how disgusted the gaming community is? Is this how virgins are just in order for girls to notice them? Honestly, I HATE the fact that gamers are actually doing this because it sets a HORRIBLE example and ruins the fun for people who ACTUALLY want to use it properly.

I hope Sony finds a way to fix this because they are a GREAT company who cares about there customers and I am sure they will find a way to solve this problem.

I won't lie... I chuckled when I read this.. Although it is disturbing.. Kids watch those streams... Sick turds.

I used the service once to stream my game feed. I have no camera for PS4, so it just had the game feed.. I think that should be enabled (direct game feed with voice only).

One 'countermeasure' is to force people to enter a credit card... Not like it would be charged... but if you violate the terms of use (specifically nudity/sex acts/etc..), they know who you are.. You are less likely to do something stupid when they can easily back track it.

I agree that some sort of countermeasure should be taken. Unlike the Twitch users who get paid by the site to run ads while they play or have a big enough community to draw a living from, the ones doing stupid stuff have nothing to lose if they should violate the terms. I guess they could ban that particular account from streaming, but that doesn't do much. Something like somehow banning that console from streaming or suspending it could be a step.

I heard about this earlier, and I mean what were they to do ban all the people? I just wish they would have done something to save the playroom for those who knew how to behave.

Yeah, it sucks to ban everyone. These things happen when it's a new service and no one really considers that "Yes, some people will use it for something lewd."

...they always do. You could bring back glow in the dark hesitating yo-yos and people would find a way to kill childhood.

I'm sure they're working with Twitch to come up with a way to bring it back in.

At least in one case (jerkass that stripped his passed out wife on stream), + alcohol. The addition of alcohol ends up with MEGA TROUBLE as the result.

Well alcohol can be trouble on it's on own, so it wouldn't have taken much to go into MEGA TROUBLE mode. Seems like all the conditions were right for first class jerkassery.

Only heavy enforcement from both Twitch and Sony can do anything about this. But yeah, the problem is mainly opening up streaming to every idiot with a PS4 whereas before to really accomplish anything on Twitch you needed your own capture card and camera. I think everyone expected abuses of the system because that's what you get when you allow people access to a system like this but the naked stuff surprised me.
