Two Controllers, One User

Is this possible? Got my son a PS4 for Christmas along with two controllers. No problem with the first controller but when we first tried to use the second controller we had to create a new user. Tried to register it under the existing user (our main account) but received an error.

Surely, it must be possible?

I have 3 and have used all under same account.
Just make sure you turn the first off first otherwise it will automatically be player 2 as well.

So the first time you use a controller on PS4 you must perform device registration (pairing).Connect the PS4 system and the controller with a USB cable when the PS4 system is turned on.
