UK PS4 supply drought will end by April, claims Sony exec

A PS4 supply shortage across Britain is unlikely to be resolved until April, according to a key executive at PlayStation UK.

The western games market has been gripped by a fever of interest in Sony's new console, with the new machine selling far above expectations across Europe and North America. Since January it has near enough doubled sales of Microsoft's Xbox One in the UK - representing a major turnaround from the previous generation where Xbox 360 outsold PS3 roughly 3:2.

PlayStation UK boss Fergal Gara said PS4 pre-orders were "numbers we never imagined, let alone seen before"
But the intense popularity of the console, coupled with the PS4's launch in Japan, means that supply manufacturers are struggling to meet demand.

I'm just glad that I managed to get my hands on one when I did. I had to wait 5-6 days for delivery but that was expected due to me ordering it over New Years. Crazy to think that 6 months after launch that the console is still in limited stock!

Call my cynical if you wish, but in my opinion this has been done on purpose simply to keep the prices sky high… It's the old 'supply and demand' trick, so pardon me whilst I roll my eyes at their comments! It's not the first time Sony has pulled a stunt like this and it certainly won't be the last. They're playing the waiting game – and so am I! Two can play that!

Yes, I must admit whilst I've been out and about I've yet to actually see a PS4 for sale anywhere. Just about any shop I've been in have still been selling PS3's at discounted prices and PS3 games. Amazon, of which I have a £50 voucher to use from Christmas (valid for ten years), have been more or less continuously out of stock of the console since launch - barring the eye wateringly expensive bundles, of course.

Anyway it's my birthday next month, which is when I'm going to start seriously considering purchasing one. Right on time for the PS4 to become plentiful in supply (hopefully). Hooray! By then I should have at least two more Amazon vouchers in my possession, so I should be able to get one at a reasonable price. I may just keep hold of them until later on in the year until some slightly better value bundles show up – we'll just have to wait and see.

Guess i lucked out in finding one last month. I would have been pissed if I couldn't play Infamous at launch.

Well, it's now April and predictably Sony have not long delivered another lump of disappointing news to potential customers with regards to further supply of the console:

So, it's looking likely we're still no nearer the end of this limited supply issue in the UK (which as I said above, I'm convinced has been manufactured in order to keep those prices sky high…). It could be a couple of months more before we start regularly seeing them appearing in the shops.

So, it seems the 'Waiting Game' continues between people like me, who don't want to be ripped off any more, and Sony…

I would stay away from the up coming batch of systems.

This sounds like a recipe for disaster. They have to mass produce the consoles in order to meet the demands, Which means quality is going to suffer there is going to be a lot of defective systems.

I am glad that i pre ordered mine. I would suggest that people wait a few months, and see what happens. There is sure to be something wrong. This is always a problem. Every time a new generation of consoles is released.

We should know the drill by now.
