Was Beyond Two Souls too linear?

So i recently got done watching a playthrough of Beyond Two Souls as i do with many games if i dont want to buy them but think theyre interesting enough to watch, and its my understanding that it was made by the same people who made Heavy Rain? I get that the games dont have to be similar but i was very disappointed at how choices really didnt effect anything.

In Heavy Rain it always felt like you were risking something when you picked something or messed up, but in Beyond Two Souls it kind of just felt like there wasnt a way to screw up even when you did. Even when missing a quicktime event in combat, the game would just have you recover pretty easily. I know the point of the game was the story and it was a a really really good one! I just feel like nowadays games have a lot of choices and variety in the story and coming from the makers of Heavy Rain, Beyond Two Souls didnt do a very good job of that.

Did you guys think Beyond Two Souls didnt feel like much other than a movie you can interact with? The gameplay just didnt seem there consequence wise. If your game is going to be made of quicktime events you at least need to punish people for failing them :P

According to what I've heard from my friends who were able to play, the game was more of a movie rather than a game, itself. I didn't bother asking them why, but if I remember correctly, they were saying that it was more on cutscenes and quicktime events. Was the story any good?

Well yes the game plays like Heavy Rain which was a game that also consisted of feeling more like a movie and operated by quicktime events but that game was still really really amazing and replayable so you could see the different conequences of stuff. Beyond Two Souls literally feels like nothing but a movie until you get to control Aiden her spirit attached thing but even when you control him everything is still scripted and you just hold down buttons.

The story was really touching and good but its not a game that i would buy. If youre interested in it maybe just watch it on youtube because youll probably get a better experience than even playing it considering you can pay more attention to detail.

No it wasn't if the devs decided to do the story telling by making it linear their own choice. And frankly I don't care because the gameplay and the story were both just bad.

Maybe it was, but is linearity REALLY a bad thing? Specially for games that are all about the story? Because I think it's not.

Okay i think maybe i didnt explain linear like i meant. EVERYTHING is linear to the point where its like a movie. Literally the only things that can be changed is some dialogue by the few dialogue options that they have, missing a quicktime event that will result in practically the same cutscene as if you hit it except you get hurt (Still doesnt do anything except change the cutscene if you get hurt, IE: no consequences), and even the parts where you fly around as the attached spirit are scripted. All of em. There is almost no actual variance in what you can do except for choose where you walk lol. Its almost like they might aswell have made it a movie and it probably could have costed less than making it a game.

It was David Cage jerking off to Ellen Page, with a cameo of Willem Dafoe. No seriously, that was it. If you see interviews for the game you can taste the uncomfortable state that they are, and in the end it just ends up being an horrible experiment that went wrong. It's not because they have good actors that everything else would be alright, i don't even know why they thought this was a good idea.
