What do you think is the PS1's legacy?

Another day, another question. This time, I would like to talk about legacies. To be exact, let's talk about the legacy that the PlayStation 1 has left. What do you think are those legacies?

The PS1 introduced another level of gaming to the world by incorporating 3D graphics and CG cinematics that made the experience so much more complete. I think that it made gaming cool. Whereas Nintendo focused more on the kids, the PS1 was more of an all around console that also fit the tastes of adults. The Playstation 1 was the first time that people compared a computer being hooked to your TV. Of course, Xbox would be running parallel with Sony's PS as this happened. I remember that the conversation amongst my fledgling group of gaming buddies were "Why would you hook a computer to your TV" not fully connecting that like a Super Nintendo, this is truly a console.

Playstation era gaming wasn't just a push in hardware capabilities, it took the work of developers of the past and pushed it to new levels. All of a sudden games had characters that began to connect with its audience. You could recognize that there were feelings that you had for the various people you played as. You were hesitant and excited as you played Metal Gear, you were sad and hopeful for the world of Final Fantasy. Who could forget the dance scene of FF 8.

Most of all as time went on young gamers were being given experiences that were building towards the social aspect of what gaming would become. Couch Co-op became a family gathering and your ability to succeed at Bushido Blade and Tekkin was all of a sudden something lifted onto a pedestal by your cousins and various other relatives.

The legacy of the playstation is not a piece of hardware or a single experience that was developed for the system, but rather the love that was created between gaming and gamers. It was the loyalty to those who continue to follow Sony through their good times, bad times and back again. It is the undying pledge to buy the set of games that your favorite developer makes at full price 100% of the time. Its not something cold and needing to be plugged into the wall, rather its the spirit of the people who were all in front of their TV, pressing the on button and then saying "Wow, how did they do that."

I think PS1's most famous legacy would have to be its controller. I could remember every other controller I've held before and after that, and seeing as every controller I've held after had the same basic structure as the first PS1 controller, to me says that they did something very right with it. Although, I'm really much more of a fan of having most of the buttons facing me like in Sega, but I suppose the majority liked it enough for it to carry on well after 3 generations later.

Interesting point. I might have to agree with you on the controller. No, Sony didn't create the joystick, but they did implement it in an amazing way. I think people kind of take the dualshock for granted because they forget about a time before it existed. The original PSX controller felt someone cheap in comparison.

I never thought along those lines but now that I think of it, I find myself agreeing with the sentiment. More than the improved graphics it was the new style of controllers which was truly revolutionary about the PS1.

I agree that the controllers are the best features on the PS consoles. I like the games as well, and their graphics are great too. I like lots of things about the PS and I don't see that changing.

Metal Gear, definitely

When i think playstation 1, the first game that comes to mind is Metal Gear Solid. Final Fantasy 7 is a close second, just because it was so heavily advertised, but for me it will always be metal gear.
