What's the appeal?

Can someone tell me what the appeal of this game is? It seems a little odd to me, but there might be something else like different gameplay that has do do with it. Is it popular because it's ridiculous, or because it's some kind of inside joke? Did it get popular because the 1st game (an app, correct?) was popular enough, so they decided to give it a go for a larger console? I'm just trying to understand, because I'm slightly confused.

I don't have it yet, but if you watch enough game play it is stupid type funny IMO.
