When is this going to become too old?

I would imagine that it won't take long. My guess would be about five years. These tech companies are constantly coming out with new things, and each company has to keep up with the other. For example, Sony and Microsoft have to keep up with the technology from the new TVs, then they have to compete with one another, blah blah.

IMO 4 k is not the future of tv's. We already have HD, so no one cares about super HD. We need something more revolutionary. I expect this generation to last at least 7-8 years.

Given the large, substantial price tags of the next-gen consoles, I would expect at least a lifespan close to that what we saw with the PS3. I will be very annoyed if it lasts just five years. Infact, it seems like a waste of time Sony and Microsoft launching the latest consoles if updates beyond their capability are already on the relatively near horizon.

With many people holding back for deals or not being able to afford the console in the first place, replacing it at a time when they're probably just coming into affordability/sensible pricing really will upset a lot of people.

We have to get to a point where we need to accept technology is simply moving by along too quickly. It takes a lot longer for people to adapt. Sometimes 'sharpening the pencil' as such (i.e – refining what's already in place) is a better solution to launching outright new products in short timescales. 'The Last Of Us' on the PS3 proved to me that there were still improvements out there to be seen from the existing generation. It shown to me that the full potential of the console still hadn't quite been reached.

5 years probably? This gen's console war has been a flop mostly with Microsoft and Nintendo struggling with their hardware, I can see them ending this soon and moving on to their next venture and hopefully learn from their mistake. I do hope Nintendo get's back to the wagon for their next console.
