When Will They Stop Making PS3 Games?

This may sound like a bit of a silly question, but I genuinely need to know the answer. I have been out of the gaming loop, as far as Sony has been concerned since the Playstation 2. After that, I was growing into an adult, and had to fend for myself more and more. All the consoles that I had gotten before that were bought for me as gifts from my mother at Christmases and birthdays. So yeah, I just didn't have the money to keep up with buying the PS3, or the games for it, although the games and everything else looked spectacular to me.

But since the release of GTA V, I have found myself wanting to get myself a PS3, because I am not fond of the Xbox at all, and I am overall more comfortable with Playstations. I have been looking into other games that I would like to play on the PS3 too, but the PS4 will be getting released pretty soon and I have been told that it would be a waste of money to invest in a PS3 now because of that. But then there are games that I won't be able to play on the PS4, and are only available on the PS3, and I really want to play them.

So, how soon after they release the PS4 do you think that they will cease to release anything new for the PS3? Would investing in a PS3 now be worth it or not? Thanks :)

I really think they will continue to support the PS3 a few years after the release of the PS4 just like they did with the PS2. Honestly, I would probably grab a PS3 as they are semi-cheap now. You could even grab a pre-owned one that would be even cheaper if you like. GTA V is absolutely brilliant and is well worth purchasing the PS3 for, as well as many Sony exclusives just being fantastic. It is true that a majority of PS3 games won't be compatible with the PS4 so bear that in mind.

The PS3 has a huge user base that game developers could not neglect just yet. The PS4 will still have a significantly less user base than that of the PS3 for about two years maybe. So until then, it would be hard not to develop games for the PS3. They would be leaving out a large sum of income if they don't make games for the PS3.

I think they'll keep producing ps3 games for at least two years beyond the launch of the ps4. Why? Because they are in business to make a profit. Not every single ps3 game is going to upgrade to the ps4. So, there is a lot of money to be made with the ps3 market at least 2 plus years into the future, beyond the launch of the ps4.

I think they will still be producing games for at least two more years, maximum three. Obviously not everyone is going to buy a PS4 right off the bat, so game developers need to satisfy those people. Plus, they want to make as much money as possible. Looking back at the PS2, many games were still being made for it long after the release of the PS3. I think the last game release was maybe 2012. I'm not 100% sure though.

Going by past performance the PS3 has a ending cycle of at least 3 years from launch. So I wouldn't go tossing your system just yet. Then again I've still got a Genesis so that could just be the hoarder in me speaking.

To put this in retrospect, the last game to launch on the Playstation 2 is FIFA 14 which was released just a few days ago.

Had to google this because that sounds unbelievable. It's true, and pretty surprising.

I remember seeing a headline quite a while ago saying that the last PS2 game had come out, guess that was wrong. I do remember hearing that PS2 games were still coming out in Japan well after the PS3 had come out.

The Playstation 3 launched here in the States in 2006. In 2007, 2008, and 2009 from what I recall the Playstation 2 still hosted a myriad of new titles. They never truly gave up on the console since it was an affordable alternative for gamers and an attractive one due to the nature of its extensive library.

...and yet, they didn't release a Wii U version.

But nowadays is the best time to get a PS3, when they are pretty cheap, the bundles are great and the library of games is at it's biggest. Definitely get one.

That is wild. I had no idea that PS2 games were still being released. Good looking out on that one! That provides us with solid hope that sony will continue to release ps3 games far into the future, hopefully 5 years after the ps4 launch.

I don't think anyone will start any new projects that will be exclusive to PS3/360 and not PS4/Xbone, the last of those will be coming out in the next few months as developers are finishing up what they've started.

This of course is all speculation but I'll assume they'll keep making games for the PS3 for years just like they did with the PS2. Sony has also said that they won't abandon PS3 from PS Plus after PS4 comes out. So you'll still get PS3 games with a plus subscription.

Well they kept making PlayStation 2 game for 12 years So I'd guess maybe 15 years? I remember at launch how they were saying the console was future proof so I believe it will last for a while.

...You can't see it, but I'm seriously crying on the inside - just big ole anime tears of gloom... Le sigh.

I think they won't stop making Playstation 3 games for about a year or two after the Playstation 4's release date. They do the same for every new Gen console, they did not stop making games for Playstation 2 and Xbox for about 2 years after its next Gen consoles.

At least 2 years after the release of the PS4. This will allow time for the PS3 gamers to switch to PS4. Also they will still make most of their money on the PS3 titles rather than the PS4. I would buy a pre owned PS3 as they are really cheap right now. They are cheaper than a smartphone!

I expect at least 2-3 more years of support for the PS3. And I only expect one more year of really strong quality support for the system. I don't think the PS3 has the same install base that the PS2 had to allow it to go for some long. The PS2 just flat out dominated its console generation. There was a lot more competition this time around.

I think games for the PS3 continue to be made for the next year or so. They will have the PS4, but they haven't stopped making games for the PS3 yet. I feel that there will be games for it until people start buying exclusively for the PS4. That's just my opinion.
